Book Review: Hollyweird

Hollyweird is a young adult novel by Terri Clark.  It starts out innocent enough, Aly wins a contest to meet Hollywood Heartthrob Dakota Danvers and fly out to Hollywood from her home in Colorado.  She takes her best friend Des with her and her sister Missy, freshly 21 years old, comes along as their guardian.

Once they arrive in Hollywood they are greeted by a driver as well as Jameson, one of the people who works for Dakota.  At a photo shoot, Aly has a moment where she thinks that Dakota’s eyes are glowing and red.  She shakes it off as nerves, but later on Desi sees the SAME thing when she goes to Dakota’s make up trailer to retrieve sunglasses she had left behind.

Jameson reveals to the girls that Dakota is a devil – and not just any devil – Satan’s son!  The girls end up pressing Jameson to find out what HE is and it turns out that he is a fallen angel.  They find out that Hollywood, or Hollyweird, rather, is full of paranormal beings.

The girls and Jameson must then go on a mission to stop Dakota from doing some pretty bad things. (I’ll leave the details to THAT for you to find out by reading the book)

The book is young adult so it is a pretty quick and fun read.  The plot of it was a lot like random stories I think of in my head (but never write down) so I enjoyed it because it felt like it could have been something I would have written (but even if I did start to write it down, I’d never get around to finishing it) The only thing that tripped me up a bit was that chapters alternated being narrated by Jameson and Aly.  At times I put the book down and forgot where I was – which led to a bit of confusion, though it’s probably just my fault for not reading a chapter straight through. 😉

Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys YA novels with a flair for the paranormal worlds.

I received a free review e-copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.

Paranormal + Hollywood + cute fallen angel = WIN

When sixteen-year-old Aly King is the grand prizewinner in the “Win a Date with Dakota” contest, it seems like a dream come true. Along with her best friend Desi, and soap star wannabe sister Missy, she flies from Colorado to Hollywood for her celebrity date. Like every other girl in America, Aly knows that Dakota Danvers is a smoking hot movie star. What she doesn’t know is that he’s also Satan’s son.

Luckily for Aly, in the City of Angels there is one actual angel, Jameson Dagon. Granted, Jameson is a fallen angel, but he has one last chance at salvation if he can derail Dakota’s evil machinations. Can Jameson protect Aly and Desi from Dakota’s damning influence, put up with Missy’s prima donna antics-and ignore his smoldering attraction to Aly?

Travel Bucket List: Kefalonia, Greece

I have a bit of a travel bucket list, places I would LOVE to visit and hopefully some day I will be able to!  I recently added “The Island of Dreams” to the list – Kefalonia which is located in Greece.

One of my ex-co-workers was Greek and ever since he showed me some photos of one of his visits to Greece I have wanted to go, and doing some research I found the small island of Kefalonia.

Kefalonia is one of Greece’s most beautiful destinations for a holiday and thousands of tourists flock there each year.

A great website to find out more about this great island is www.kefalonia.co.uk.  It tells you some background on the island and how it has become a big holiday spot in recent years and it also has a great search feature to help you plan your stay!  It has been developed to let you know everything that you need to know about your dream vacation to Kefalonia.

All of the resorts and villas look absolutely gorgeous – and the water is so blue!  We definitely don’t have anything beautiful like that here in the north east.  One of the villas said that the area it is in is sometimes the home to loggerhead turtles!  It would be so cool to see that up close.  I’m definitely going to have a difficult time picking out where to stay when it comes time to visiting Kefalonia.

Idol – Top 4

Phillip – Have You Ever Seen The Rain – Decent performance, but while I used to think he was going to win this, I really dont think so anymore.

Hollie – Faithfully – Great rendition from Hollie. I’m kind of shocked she outlasted Skylar (who i had picked for top 2), but she does seem to be growing each week the past few weeks.

Joshua – You Raise Me Up – If Joshua doesnt win this thing, I dont know whats wrong with the world.

Jessica – Steal Away – Again, she has good voice but her performances do NOTHING for me.

Phillip & Joshua – This Love – Great song choice and duet.

Jessica & Hollie – Eternal Flame – WOW Jessica sounded like crap on this! And she totally overpowered Hollie so it was a mess.

Top 4 – Waiting – I think they all sounded great together and its almost making me rethink my decision to not go see them on tour… here’s hoping I win tickets.

Phillip – Volcano – I loved this performance from him. Hmm. Could I go back to liking him again? We’ll see.

Hollie – I Can’t Make You Love Me – After I loved her first performance, this one wasn’t that great. Unfortunate.

Joshua – It’s a Man’s World – awesome awesome awesome (and i loved the gears on the screens in the background)

Jessica – And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going – Good voice but I still feel like something is missing

Bottom 2 : Phillip and Jessica

Going Home: Phillip

Totally wrong. Again. Why do I even try? lol

Book Review: How to Travel the World For Free

When I saw the title “How to Travel the World For Free” I instantly knew I wanted to read this book and find out how!  After reading it, I’m not sure that this method is for me – but it was certainly interesting reading about Michael Wigge’s travels.

His goal was to get the Antarctica – The End of the World – all while starting out on his travels without a penny.  He spent time dumpster diving for food and also told his story at various bakeries and restaurants in hopes that they would just give him food (he had an 80% success rate in the US, but didn’t do as well in some other countries).  He did strange things on the street for a dollar – like in Vegas he was a human couch and let people sit on him to rest for a dollar.  And in San Francisco he had a pillow fight with people for $1 (This seemed to be one of his more successful endeavors). He also sold himself as a butler for a day and did other odd jobs in exchange for cash or train/bus/plane tickets.

I think the most fascinating part of his story was the “detour” he took to Hawaii and how that went about happening for him.  I won’t give away too many details of how that all went down because you should definitely check out this book for yourself.

Did he meet his goal of Antarctica? Or did he cave and use a credit card to buy some food after going a day and a half without eating?

Do you think that you could survive traveling without any money and having to beg, borrow, steal and couch surf?  I am not sure that I could do it but I definitely give props to those who can!

The Voice – Finale

Ah… the finale of the voice.  4 hours of TV and less than 30 minutes of actual content. But I loved every minute of it. Well, maybe.  Towards the end I was just getting a bit angry. And during the beginning of the Tuesday night show too.  The show now makes me rage now. Too much drama!

Monday performances:

Jermaine – I Believe I Can Fly – Jermaine is really good and I think that he is definitely up there to be in the top 2…

Juliet – Crazy – Missed half of this performance because I was out and came in in the middle of it… (then got kicked out of the TV room when tried to watch it back from the recording lol) but it was a solid performance from Juliet from what I heard

Chris & Christina – The Prayer – I wasn’t sure if Christina was going to try and out sing him in this, but it seemed like a decent match.

Tony – 99 Problems – Definitely an interesting twist on a song and of course I loved it. Way to go Tony!  (And eff you Christina. I love you but really… I don’t get it)

Chris – The Voice Within – Well, his coach completely ruined this for me. Gosh Christina. I’m sorry Tony didn’t want to date you TWENTY YEARS AGO (or whatever it is that is bugging your ass)

Juliet and CeeLo – Born To Be Wild – Really great song choice for the both of them!

Tony and Adam – Yesterday – I just love these two.

Jermaine – God Gave Me You – Great performance by Jermaine. (And I love Dave Barnes who wrote this song)

Chris – You Raise Me Up – Eh. I’m growing less and less tolerant of him as the night goes on, unfortunately due to his coach. I should keep the two separate but it’s getting to the point I can’t anymore.

Blake and Jermaine – Soul Man – I wasnt sure what these two were going to do together, but I think this worked out really, really well for the two of them and was a lot of fun!

Tony – Harder To Breathe – Oops. I dont really know the words to this one either and it is fast paced. He probably should have picked something different from the M5 catalog…

Juliet – Free Bird – Another interesting song choice from Juliet. I like her, but I think she is a bit too shouty/screachy at times to be ‘the voice’ (and im wicked biased because a guy Ive had a crush on for 20something years is in the competition, so ya know)

My predictions on winning:

Tony – Winner
Jermaine – 2nd
Juliet – Runner up
Chris – Runner Up

I Want You Back with Jermaine, Pip, Jamar and James was great. My mom wants them to form their own group and said “they can be a boyband!”  Eh, maybe. I guess if Jermaine doesn’t win then he can always fall back on that.

Chris, Lindsay and Katrina was a bit of a bust for me. Chris seems too shouty when he is singing non-opera songs.

Juliet Jamar Erin and RaeLyn – This group really sounded great together too! Although I think Jamar got louder cheers than Juliet!

Tony & Jordis – Awesome performance from Tony and Jordis. Now can we find out who wins? No.. another half an hour to go?

Well, I had 4th place right… but everything else was screwed up.  I’m totally cool with Jermaine winning though – if it couldn’t be Tony I’d have wanted it to be Jermaine.

Honor Society private party

Saturday after seeing Honor Society at Garden State Plaza, I went to the Paramus Park Mall and hung out with my friend Marisa who was selling cupcakes and cookies with her new bakery Semisweet.  I had gotten a hotel for the night so I could go to a private Honor Society event on Sunday and thought it would be fun just to hang with her than in the hotel room.

I watched Eli Manning host SNL and then went to bed. At 3am I was awoken by a crazy noise and I was SO confused. I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  Turns out, it was the fire alarm at the hotel! I put my jeans back on so I wouldn’t freeze in my PJ pants and debated taking my stuff outside and then went outside by the car to wait it out. I didn’t see any fire or anything so I figured my things would be ok. About 15 minutes later a fire truck came and the alarms were turned off, but it was definitely rough getting back to sleep. (AND check out was 11 when I thought it was 12 from the site I booked the room on)

I then went to the Fireman’s Hall that the show was being held at.  There were about 20-25 people there in total and Honor Society hung out from 12-3ish.  They mingled, did photos, and then did a decently long set – although I guess it seems longer on paper because they “teased” clips of a bunch of songs that they didn’t want to perform or didn’t remember how to perform them lol  For 2 songs a bunch of the girls went up to sing while the guys played, I have videos of it which I will be sharing hopefully before I head off to Tulsa! (Trying to balance work plus photos and videos when working extra hours is not easy!)

Somehow I ended up not talking to Jason at all, and I really don’t know how that ended up happening.  Once he was coming towards me and said hi, but then a couple other girls started talking to him and a couple other times when I headed towards him he got pulled away by someone else too. I am not sure how it always ends up that I spend the least amount of time with Jason!

After the performance there was birthday cake for Alex (his birthday is the 21st) and he was singing happy birthday too and clapping and being all happy and then everyone went “Dear ALEX” and he was SO surprised the cake was for him. I hope someone captured that on video because it was hilarious.

The party cost $60 to get in to to help split the costs of booking them and I have to say it was the best $60 ive spent in a LONG time. So much fun!  One of the girls there is booking them in August so I am hoping I’ll be able to make it to that one as well – it will be a blast!

Book Review: Groove Music

Groove Music is a book by Mark Katz.  It is about Hip Hop, but more specifically, The DJ and how DJs mixing led to hip hop and DJ battles and all sorts of fun stuff.  It actually took me a while to get through the book, I think because hip hop isn’t really my “thing”, so I don’t know as much about all the players as I do with some of the other music books I have read.

Interestingly enough, a couple of pages in I saw a familiar word – “MMMBop”!  It talked about how the single had record scratching in it, and previously that had not really been done in pop music.  I was actually so excited to see this mention that I ran off to my coworker to share.  The song is actually mentioned again a bit further in to the book and it talks about some other songs from that time frame that also brought the record scratching to more mainstream music.

I went in to the book thinking I wouldn’t recognize anything mentioned in it – but there is a lot of talk about the song “Rappers Delight”, and I actually saw Sugar Hill Gang live a while back – they opened for NSYNC.  Not sure how that pairing came about and it was only my 2nd concert ever, waaay back in 1999… so I don’t really remember much about them. (cool story right?)  But there was also mention of Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff which I definitely listened to a ton as a kid because my mom loooves Will Smith.

The author has certainly done his research and there is a TON of info in here (even on female DJs!) and lots of pictures to go along with the text as well.  Pictures of DJs and even equipment!

I received a free e-copy of this book to review from the publisher from NetGalley. I was not asked to write a favorable review and all opinions are my own.

About the Book

It’s all about the scratch in Groove Music, award-winning music historian Mark Katz’s groundbreaking book about the figure that defined hip-hop: the DJ.

Today hip-hop is a global phenomenon, and the sight and sound of DJs mixing and scratching is familiar in every corner of the world. But hip-hop was born in the streets of New York in the 1970s when a handful of teenagers started experimenting with spinning vinyl records on turntables in new ways. Although rapping has become the face of hip-hop, for nearly 40 years the DJ has proven the backbone of the culture. In Groove Music, Katz (an amateur DJ himself) delves into the fascinating world of the DJ, tracing the art of the turntable from its humble beginnings in the Bronx in the 1970s to its meteoric rise to global phenomenon today. Based on extensive interviews with practicing DJs, historical research, and his own personal experience, Katz presents a history of hip-hop from the point of view of the people who invented the genre. Here, DJs step up to discuss a wide range of topics, including the transformation of the turntable from a playback device to an instrument in its own right, the highly charged competitive DJ battles, the game-changing introduction of digital technology, and the complex politics of race and gender in the DJ scene.

Exhaustively researched and written with all the verve and energy of hip-hop itself, Groove Music will delight experienced or aspiring DJs, hip-hop fans, and all students or scholars of popular music and culture.

Tyrone Wells Fairfield Theater

Finally, Sunday night it was time to see Tyrone Wells!  I bought a ticket to this show when he first posted his dates and I think it was originally suppose to be April 29.  Then it got moved to April 28 and then it got moved to May 6 and at first I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it or not because Hanson hadn’t yet released the details for their members only event. But in the end, everything worked out all right.

The opening act was Joe Brooks, who apparently almost everyone in the audience was there to see. I overheard some of the theater workers saying they thought that a lot of people might leave after his set.  I knew nothing about him going in to the show, did a quick google search on him on my phone before his set, and by the time he was done I was in love.  I didn’t keep track of his setlist but a lot of people were recording the show so maybe I can piece something together from youtube at a later date.  You can find out more about joe at his website – http://www.joebrooks.com

I had been listening to Tyrone’s CD non stop for a couple of days before the show and was beyond ready to see a set from him again (previously I had not seen him since the Rock Boat in 09).  He told some great stories during his set and had a lot of great things to say.  He talked about how women have a lot to deal with because of magazines and the medias portryal of them and if there is a guy that doesn’t like you for who you are then he isn’t the guy for you.  He also talked about how he saw a statistic that if you have a car and a roof over your head you are in the top 3% of weath in the world (or something like that.)  He teased about how a lot of people don’t  realize that he is white because his name is Tyrone and how his parents didn’t seem to realize they were white based on the names of him and his sisters.  Although I think my favorite story was about a guy named Sam.  I think I heard him tell this story once before – but he was playing at a swap meet and he heard a girl on her phone saying that “Some Guy” was performing Sea Breeze.  Apparently Sam had told the girl he liked that he had written it for her and Tyrone had to convince this girl that it was indeed his song and not Sam’s.  Finally she believed him and then mentioned another song asking if it was his too. He had said no, because the title didn’t match any of his songs. But when she sang a couple of lines, he realized that too was his song and this Sam character was playing Tyrone’s songs and trying to pass them off as his own!

Tyrone also can yodel and treated us to a song with yodeling. I’ll try to post video of it soon!  He also did a medley of covers – Straight Up, Everybody Dance Now and Beat It. He mocked us all for only being really enthusiastic on the BEAT IT! BEAT IT! and not knowing the rest of the chorus.  (Guilty as charged lol)

Tyrone has a great voice and was very entertaining and I definitely recommend that you check him out if he is coming to your town on his tour!  If not, pick up his new album, Where We Meet which is available now! (And I will be reviewing it on the site in the next couple of months as I try to figure out the best way to start incorporating CD Reviews)

Book Review: Dreaming of the Dead

Dreaming of the dead is written by Marilou Trask-Curtin and talks about the real life experiences that she has had with the dead.  When she was four she had a near death experience and since then she has been able to communite with those who have passed.

She grew up being raised by her grandparents, who both passed away within 4 months of each other when she was just 18 years old.  Her grandmother went first and came back to tell her that she missed her grandfather terribly.  He died 4 months later.  He returned to let her know where his safe deposit box was hidden while she and her boyfriend Butch were looking around the house for it to bring it to the bank.

Butch also came to her in a dream to let her know that he had died. Some months later a relative asked her if she knew about Butch and when she replied that he died, the relative was shocked.

Some of the stories seem a bit far fetched – but are interesting all the same – embellished or not.  While at Gillette’s castle (in Connecticut!) she decided to write a biography on William Gillette and he visited her in her dreams several times to give her permission to write it and check on her progress.  Also while she was in Connecticut she had dreams of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe (all of which have homes / museums here in Connecticut, though I’ve yet to visit either).

I too am sometimes “connected” with those who have passed in my dreams – mainly just my maternal grandparents though, never anyone else.  They tend to pop up in other dreams though, for Marilou it seems like there are special dreams from these people just for her.  Mine are more like interruptions, they pop up out of nowhere to tell me something. Sometimes what they tell me makes sense, othertimes I am baffled.

Although I did once have a visitor in my room, though the fact that I could only see their back has led to much speculation over whether it was my uncle or great grandfather (who died in the bed that I was sleeping in at the time.)  The figure seemed to be young which led us all to believe that it was my uncle who was killed in vietnam, but Marilou writes that some of her dreams included her grandfather and British actor Jeremy Brett looking much younger than they were when they had passed.  So I guess I’ll never know who it was, unless they decide to come by again and let me see their face!

I found this book to be incredibly interesting and for once it was a book with “ghosts” that didn’t really freak me out! (I even read chapter 1 while in bed trying to fall asleep!)   Although now the urge to check out Mark Twain’s house has gotten even stronger – and maybe we’ll have to check out Harriett Beecher Stowe’s home and Gillette castle as well!

I received a free e-copy of this book through NetGalley from Llewellyn Worldwide.  I was not asked to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% mine.

About the Book

Ever since a near-death experience when she was four, Marilou Trask-Curtin has been able to communicate with spirits, primarily in unusually vivid and realistic dreams. Over the years she has seen many spirits, and has communicated with her first love, her beloved grandfather, and even British actor Jeremy Brett, with whom she’d grown close through years of correspondence. The spirits come to offer advice, reassurance, or to let her know they have died or are about to-this includes her companion animals who return to show they’re as full of health and joy as their human counterparts in spirit. The author also tells of dream visits from historical “mentor” figures such as Samuel L. Clemens and Harriet Beecher Stowe, as well as many others. Dreaming of the Dead offers readers an incredibly compelling journey to the world that awaits us all on the other side of life’s doorway.

Honor Society at the Garden State Plaza

Saturday afternoon, Honor Society performed at Macy’s at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ.  The performance was at the “M Style Lab” in the junior’s section of Macy’s to help promote the Macy’s and I Heart Radio Rising Star contest, which Honor Society is a finalist in.

I wasn’t quite sure how a performance in a store was going to work, but for the most part they seemed to know what they were doing.  The show kicked off at 3pm and the guys did 5 songs.  Then it was time for the M&G.  The line wrapped through the store so we were able to do a bit of shopping while waiting!  The guys signed the classroom poster (from 2008?) and chatted a bit with everyone.  I guess some girls hung around after the M&G to try and get pics with the guys and were tweeting that security practically had to carry the guys away because they didn’t want to leave! (They are originally from NY/NJ but since moving out to LA their trips back east are a bit less frequent than we all would like.)

Setlist and photos below… it was a good time and my 31st Honor Society show!
