Maroon 5 at MGM Grand

Thursday night Maroon 5 had a concert at the MGM Grand Casino at Foxwoods.  Originally there was a different opening act announced but a few days before the show Javier Colon tweeted and said that he would be opening, so obviously I was thrilled.
At 7pm the curtain rose and there was Javier with his band.  First he did Someone Like You – an adele cover. Then he did some songs from his album Come Through For You including Running, Raise Your Hand and Stand Up, Man Up.  Everyone was going nuts for his bass player during Stand Up who was dancing around.  Javier said that when they first started playing together he didn’t know that “Big Sexy” did that and was wondering why everyone was going nuts during the song.  He played his next single – Drop in the Ocean which he accidentally said was written by Ron Paul. (It is written by Ron Pope)  and he finished out his set with Stitch by Stitch and Coldplay’s Fix You.  He didn’t talk as much as he did when he is the headliner and mentioned he was trying to fit in as many songs as possible into his set.

Then we had a break and at about 8pm it was time for Maroon 5! Everyone up front rushed to the stage and I commented that I was glad we were not down there. (My friend Jessa that I went with is pregnant and one poke to me would land me on the floor!)

We were hoping they would do more old songs than new since we weren’t all that familiar with the Hands All Over album (I know, I know, I am such a freaking slacker) but were pleasantly surprised when the majority of the set appeared to be from Songs About Jane – which is turning 10 years old.  I can’t believe that I first saw them (almost) 10 years ago opening for John Mayer!

They opened their set with a bit of Stereo Hearts and then went right in to This Love. Which was followed by Harder to Breathe and Sunday Morning. I was becoming nervous that all the songs I knew would make up the first half of the set – but quickly realized they had a LOT more singles than I had thought and so I knew a good majority of the songs from the radio.

Adam seemed to have turned his stage precense into moves like jagger. Which I dont remember him doing the last time I saw them. Maybe the song went to his head. ha ha. He was also pretty funny with his talking to the crowd – saying that if we didn’t participate and help him out we’d all go home crying.  At one point he kept going “Say Yeah!” and then everyone would of course say “YEAH!” and then he said that he wasn’t sure how you end it when you do that and realized that “Everybody SCREAM!” works so then he tried it again with everybody scream at the end and he said that he was now going to use that on tour and thanked us for helping him figure that out.

I thought the set was pretty short and some girls in the elevator when we were leaving were calling it the “shortest concert ever” their main set was about an hour and then we had the encore which brought it to just under an hour and a half.  For the encore they did Moves Like Jagger, Hands All Over (pretty much the only song I didn’t know) and then She Will Be Loved.  I loved how they ended the show with She Will Be Loved and the crowd was split.  The other side was singing “she will be loved” while our side snapped our fingers and sang “I don’t mind spending every day… out on your corner in the pouring rain” and then Adam directed us as a huge chorus.  It was pretty awesome (and the acoustics at the theater are great for this kind of thing), it was such a great way to end the show on a high note.

Unfortunately I was slacking in the charging the camera battery department and my battery died pretty early on and then I discovered the “backup” I brought was ALSO dying.  So I did my best with photos but I did not take nearly as many as I would have liked.  Lesson learned – I’ll be buying an additional charger for the car so this kind of thing won’t happen again (hopefully).  I would have had no problem charging at least one of them on the hour trip up to the casino!

Book Review & Giveaway: As One Devil to Another

As One Devil to Another by Richard Platt was quite an entertaining read.  The book is a series of letters, mostly from Slashreap to his nephew and protege, Scardagger, who are as you may have guessed, both devils.

The book also includes some great illustrations of the devils which I really enjoyed seeing every few chapters.

Slashreap is teaching Scardagger how to win the soul of a woman away from Heaven and get her for Hell.  Scardagger is not doing such a great job of it, and Slashreap is certain to let him know this!

It was interesting to see the devil’s perspective on life and almost mock what the living are doing.  Since the letters are one sided, you almost have to guess what Scardagger might have done or written to his uncle to elicit such a response from him.  Slashreap is certainly an interesting character, but one that I think you will enjoy!

If you think you might be interested in reading this book (and be sure to read the blurb below as I am sure I have missed key points in my review – as I probably always do for fear of giving away too much of the plot) then be sure to enter the giveaway we are doing sponsored by Tyndale.  One lucky reader will win a certificate to get their very own copy of the book from their local Christian bookstore. If you’re on the fence about reading it – enter anyway – it’ll be a free book for you – what have you got to lose? And you’ll probably end up enjoying it.

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for my review. I was also sent a reward certificate to send to the lucky contest winner.

About the Book

My dear scardagget, we shall now begin the task of satisfying your ever-growing hunger…. a client has been selected for you by the low command.

Thus begins an early piece of correspondance in As One Devil to Another, an astonishing debut work from Richard Platt that foremost C.S. Lewis authority Walter Hooper declares “a stunning achievement, the finest example of the genre of diabolical correspondance to appear since this genre was popularized by C.S. Lewis.”

Enter into this chilling and diabolical tale, one that reveals the very tricks and strategies of Hell.  Through a series of letters between devils created by Platt, senior devil Slashreap trains his young protege, Scardagger, to win a soul away from Heaven and into their clutches. As the devils plot their way to triumph, they reveal that the spiritual dangers and risks we face in today’s society.  Their firghteningly accurate perspective on issues such as contemporary technology and sexual mores is interwoven with timeless matters such as the power of prayer, the purpose of suffering, and the promises held out by Heaven…and Hell.

Destined to become a modern classic, As One Devil To Another is a brilliantly written, deeply unsettling perspective on twenty-first-century society . . . a glimpse of ourselves through the eyes of those who have embraced their underworldy existence.

Richard Platt has been in love with words and the music of language all his life, but he did not begin writing until his early forties. He is a contributor to the literary quarterly Slightly Foxed, was a finalist for a 2012 San Diego Foundation Creative Catalyst Fellowship for his one-man play, Ripples From Walden Pond: An Evening with Henry David Thoreau, and has studied and volunteered at The Kilns, C.S. Lewis’ former home in Oxford.

Walter Hooper is the editor of The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis.

Idol Top 3!

We are down to the final 3 in American Idol!  Jessica, Joshua and Phillip.  Each sang 3 songs – the judges pick, the contestants pick and Jimmy Iovine’s pick.

Round 1 – Judges Pick

Joshua – Id Rather Go Blind – looooove him still. I dont think he has had a bad performance yet.

Jessica – My All  – Not a good performance at ALL.  They tell people never to do it and then they give it to people to sing. I don’t get it.

Phillip – Beggin – Good performance, but I think I have to give this round to Joshua.

Round 2 – Contestants Pick

Joshua – Imagine – Beautiful. (And I typed this before Steven said the same thing.  Jennifer’s seat at the judge’s table is open… maybe I can fill it?)

Jessica – I Dont Want To Miss a Thing –  Love this song. Hate this performance.

Phillip – Disease – Im kind of torn on this performance. It was good but not great.

Round 3 – Jimmy’s pick

Joshua – No More Drama – He kind of made me sea sick with the bouncing, but I still freaking love him.

Jessica – I’ll Be There – I thought the performance was weak. I also thought it was weird Randy said he didnt like when people sang Mariah, they gave her a Mariah song earlier and then he suggested she do the Mariah version. Huh?

Phillip – We’ve Got Tonight – I thought that this was one of the best performances of the night! Maybe Phillips best yet. WOW.

I dont get why Phillip is NEVER in the Ford commercials.  Is he sicker than they are leading on? Or does he just weasel his way out of them? It is like 4 or 5 weeks now that he has not been in them with no real explanation.  It was just incredibly obvious this week (and last week too).

The finale contestants are: Jessica (what?? she shouldn’t even BE there) and Phillip (again, whatt??)

Super, super, suuuuper bummed Joshua is not in it! But I guess I’m back on Team Phillip. (And it looks like we’re headed towards another white guy with a guitar winner…)

Stefano Langone Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that my favorite contestant from Idol last season was Stefano Langone.  When I found out that he would be performing at the Dunkin Donuts Music Lounge I entered 300 times to make sure I would win.  There would be 15 winners.  Turns out – only 8 girls ended up entering so I could have gotten away with entering only once… but I had no idea how popular he was with anyone else.

He was scheduled to do a performance / live chat at noon but it got pushed back to 1pm.  Fortunately I ended up taking the day off after the crazy airport drama so I had no problem hanging around.  Only 2 other girls ended up showing up.  I was glad for that because I thought it would be really awkward if it was just me in the room and him singing haha

He did 3 songs from his upcoming album (he said it is probably going to be out late summer / early autumn) and they were called Last Day, Cherry on Top and Yes To Love.  Then he  gave us an extra song – If You Don’t Know Me By Now.  All the songs from his album were great and I really can not wait for it to come out!  He didn’t do his current single, I’m on a Roll because it was just him and a piano and he said he couldn’t do it with just the piano.

After the performance we got to meet him – and he actually said he remembered me from VIP over the summer.  How crazy! I’m sure he met a ton of people… he also remembered my name from when I introduced myself before his performance so he must just have a really awesome memory.  He also told me to tweet him so he can follow me on twitter – and now he is!

He’s such a sweet guy and I really hope that his cd does well and I get to see him again and again 🙂

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine

I have frizzy hair. I hate it, but there isn’t much I can do about it. Until now!  Garnier Fructis has come out with a new line of shampoos and conditioners.  I’ve been using “Sleek and Shine” which contains some “fruit science” – apricot oil and ultra-smoothing Argan Oil from Morocco.  Sleek and Shine will keep your hair sleek for a full 3 days, even in 97% humidity!

Usually, shampoos that promote “anti frizz” or anything of that sort end up weighing down your hair with a nasty residue in order to make your hair too heavy to frizz up.  I don’t like using this products because they don’t leave my hair feeling clean when I am out of the shower.  My natural wavy and curlyness to my hair also gets weighed down. Garnier Fructis’ Sleek and Shine does not do this at all.  In fact, the first time I used the shampoo and conditioner I went to bed right after. I woke up with some ridiculous bed head (I really wish I took a photo) and the whole right side of my head was one GIANT curl.  I obviously brushed it out because it was a bit extreme of a hairdo to try and wear out in public, but the fact that my hair curled to that extreme just shows you that the shampoo didn’t leave my hair weighed down – AND there was noticably less frizz. (I’d say 90% of my usual daily frizz was gone – which is amazing.)

Another great thing about these new Garnier products is that they come in  Eco-Fructis Bottles. It is a new lighter bottle design made of PET and 30% recycled products.  You really can’t go wrong there – shampoo and conditioner that is great for your hair and great for the environment too!

The complete line of Garnier products can be found on their website: http://www.garnierusa.com/_en/_us/fructis/index.aspx#/products

Garnier is also on Facebook, so be sure to give them a ‘like’ to be kept up to date on everything that is happening with their products!  facebook.com/GarnierUSA

I received a free Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner in order to write this review through BzzAgent.  All opinions are 100% honest and 100% mine and I was not otherwise compensated.

Hanson Members Only Event

Sunday night, Hanson had their (now) annual Members Only Event in Tulsa, OK.  Fans from all over the world came for the show.  There were 2 sessions and I was in Session 2, which was at 9pm.

Unfortunately, since the event was being recorded there were times when I could not see all 3 guys over the camera men’s heads, but hopefully the recordings will end up being streamed so I’ll be able to see what I was missing at those times 😉

This Members Only Event (MOE) was special because the guys have been a band for 20 years (hard to believe, I know, since Zac is only 26) and it has been 15 years since the release of their debut single MMMBop and debut album Middle of Nowhere. (released in 1997)

They started out by showing us their very first audition from 20 years ago.  They were auditioning to perform at Mayfest, a Tulsa event that happens every year in you guessed it, May.  The video was absolutely adorable, but at times I had more fun watching the guys reactions as they watched the audition.

They started off by singing the song “Rain” acapella, which I believe was one of the first songs that they had written together. (My brain is fuzzy because I am so sleepy, and you’ll find out why probably next week when I re-cap the non concert portions of the trip)

Then they went in to the song “Think” (originally by Aretha) to show us one of the songs that they grew up listening to and singing when they were kids.  Next up was Thinking Bout Somethin which you can tell definitely has a lot of inspiration from Think and other similar songs they grew up on.

Next up was Lonely Again – a rare B side that was performed on their 2000 tour, but one that I hadn’t heard live before.  And then they talked about how they gave us a lot of songs on members only CDs through the years but we often have to put up with a lot of “crap” that Zac adds to the cd.  They performed “All This Love Crap” which was a song Zac wrote for Valentine’s Day a few years back and they made a music video for it.  It was great to hear such rare songs live!  Then they went in to Every Word I Say, which isn’t as rare but definitely a fan favorite and B side to the Penny and Me single.

Then they played the new members only cd in its entirety – Up All night, My Own, No Sleep for Banditos, Heartbreaker and Chasing Down My Dreams along with a video that talked a bit about each of the songs.

They also premiered part of a song called “Tonight” which is set to be on the new album.  Taylor announced that they intended to do another members only event in the fall to let us hear the new music they are working on first.

For the encore they did Lost Without Each Other, Give a Little and This Time Around.  Unfortunately this year since the crowd was SO big (600+ people in each session, if everyone who RSVPed showed up) we were unable to get group photos with the guys, but that’s ok as I am kind of  “over” those group photos and would prefer one on one pics.

Look for lots more details on the trip next week! (I was intending to only do 1 post, but considering all the drama that went down on the flight home, that may end up getting its own post)

Book Review: United Breaks Guitars

When I picked Dave Carroll’s “United Breaks Guitars” to read, I wasn’t aware of the viral videos that went along with his story. I’m kind of shocked I didn’t – millions of hits, music videos, where the heck was I for this? I chose to read it simply because when I saw Hanson in June of last year they were complaining about how the airline broke one of their guitars (although I think in their case it was actually American, though my memory may be tricking me.)

The story is that Dave is a musician and was traveling and while on the plane another passenger commented out loud that they guys on the tarmac were throwing guitars.  Turns out it was his bands guitars and one of them was damaged by the trip.  When Dave questioned United about it, he was told that was what he signed a waver for (except he was given no waiver) and no one really gave a crap about him or his guitar.  Gotta love that customer service, right?

Dave decided that he would not stop until his issue was resolved and after numerous emails and phone calls he realized United wasn’t going to do much so he decided he was going to write 3 songs about the issue and see what would happen then.

The video went viral and Dave became an overnight sensation with everyone from CNN to Letterman wanting to have an interview with him. (Some of which didn’t work out for whatever reason.)

The book talks about the incident with United, how he tried to resolve everything first with United and his “threat” to write these songs about United.  Then it goes in to his thought process with writing each song and deciding what it would be about and what genre it would be.  But it also talks about social media and how valuable of a tool it is for companies as well as consumers because it is so easy to get the word out there about new products or in the case of a consumer bad products and bad customer service.

Dave’s career has now taken off, he is an artist and author and a public speaker. You can find out more about Dave at http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/

I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in order to write this review.

About the Book

Songwriter Dave Carroll wasn’t the first person abused by an airline’s customer service. But he was the first to show how one person, armed with creativity, some friends, $150, and the Internet, could turn an entire industry upside down.

United Airlines had broken Dave’s guitar in checked luggage. After eight months of pestering the company for compensation, he turned to his best tool—songwriting—and vowed to create a YouTube video about the incident that he hoped would garner a million views in one year. Four days after its launching, the first million people had watched “United Breaks Guitars.” United stock went down 10 percent, shedding $180 million in value; Dave appeared on outlets as diverse as CNN and The View. United relented. And throughout the business world, people began to realize that “efficient” but inhuman customer-service policies had an unseen cost—brand destruction by frustrated, creative, and socially connected customers.

“United Breaks Guitars” has become a textbook example of the new relationship between companies and their customers, and has demonstrated the power of one voice in the age of social media. It has become a benchmark in the customer-service and music industries, as well as branding and social-media circles. Today, more than 150 million people are familiar with this story.

In this book, you’ll hear about how Dave developed the “just do it” philosophy that made him the ideal man to take on a big corporation, what it felt like to be in the center of the media frenzy, and how he’s taken his talents and become a sought-after songwriter and public speaker. And businesspeople will learn how companies should change their policies and address social-media uprisings.

Since “United Breaks Guitars” emerged, nothing is the same—for consumers, for musicians, or for business. Whether you are a guitarist, a baggage handler, or a boardroom executive, this book will entertain you and remind you that we are all connected, that each of us matters, and that we all have a voice worth hearing.

Dave Carroll is a singer-songwriter and social media innovator from Halifax, Canada. Following his 2009 YouTube music video release called “United Breaks Guitars,” about his poor customer service experience with United Airlines, Dave’s career blossomed and he is now a highly-sought-after performer, content creator, author, keynote speaker, and consumer advocate.

Book Review: Star Wars The Clone Wars

Star Wars The Clone Wars: The Enemy Within is one of the first comic books I’ve read on my Nook Tablet.  I have to say I was not all that impressed with the quality, it was incredibly difficult to read some of the dialogue, and making the pages larger made the problem worse, not better.  Pages became more fuzzy the bigger I made it.  I think I would enjoy comic books on the nook a lot more if they were a bit more HQ. (Or maybe HD?)

That being said, the illustrations in this book were great.  The story is about a gang of Clone Troopers whos mission goes bad and they end up being attacked by Drones and them some other large green Chewbacca looking things.  There’s a bit of a subplot as well, but I don’t want to give too much away (and who knows how much I missed making up words when I couldn’t make out a bubble of text)

You can preview this comic at Dark Horse Comics website: http://www.darkhorse.com/Books/19-465/Star-Wars-The-Clone-Wars–The-Enemy-Within-TPB

I think I might stick to comic books in “real life” instead of on the Nook, although I do have one more to check out.  I received a free e-copy of this book from the publisher in order to write this review.

About the Book

Spearheading a bold, covert mission intended to bring an end to the fighting on a war-torn world, a platoon of Clone Troopers find their plans undone by faulty intelligence and bad luck, and themselves stranded deep inside hostile territory. With no choice but to see their flawed mission through to its end, the ragged soldiers make their final push toward their target, unaware that their victory could spell disaster for the Republic!

Dirty Dozen in space!

Book Review: Baby’s In Black

Baby’s in Black is one of the first graphic novels I have reviewed. I’m not usually one to read them, but I really enjoyed this one.  The book is entirely done in Black and White, which I think really helped set the scene for the story.  The story is about The Beatles at the beginning of their career.  There’s John, Pete, George, Paul and Stuart.  Not the lineup we’re so used to hearing about.  They are playing in a club in Germany that not a lot of people freqent.  Klaus ends up checking them out and really loving the band so he drags his friend Astrid along the next night.
Astrid is a photographer and wants to photograph the band, and they agree.  She ends up falling in love with Stuart, they get engaged and he leaves the Beatles and ends up living with Astrid and pursuing art in her attic. (His real love, he was just in the band to help out John.)
I think that the graphic novel is a really interesting approach to tell this story – which is based on the true story of the beginning of the Beatles, by the way – rather than just using words which probably wouldn’t have made things quite as interesting.
If you like graphic novels and like music (especially the Beatles) then I would recommend that you check out this book. It’s really nicely done.
I received a free review e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.  I was not otherwise compensated.
About the Book
A fascinating, exhilarating portrait of the Beatles in their early years.
Meet the Beatles . . . right at the beginning of their careers.
This gorgeous, high-energy graphic novel is an intimate peek into the early years of the world’s greatest rock band. The heart of Baby’s In Black is a love story. The “fifth Beatle,” Stuart Sutcliffe, falls in love with the beautiful Astrid Kirchherr when she recruits the Beatles for a sensational (and famous) photography session during their time in Hamburg. When the band returns to the UK, Sutcliffe quits, becomes engaged to Kirchherr, and stays in Hamburg. A year later, his meteoric career as a modern artist is cut short when he dies unexpectedly.
The book ends as it begins, with Astrid, alone and adrift; but with a note of hope: her life is incomparably richer and more directed thanks to her friendship with the Beatles and her love affair with Sutcliffe. This tender story is rendered in lush, romantic black-and-white artwork.

Baby’s In Black is based on a true story.
