Book Review: Night Sky

Night Sky is narrated by Jameson, a high school senior who has been in love with his best friend Sarah for 3 years, but recently “lost” her to Eric, the guy he helped her get for her boyfriend.  One day on the way home he meets Sky, a college girl who just moved in a few doors down with her grandparents from Alaska.  At first, he finds that she is just a distraction from pining over Sarah, but quickly he begins falling for her.

Sky tells Jay that if they are going to be even just friends she wants nothing but honesty from him all the time. The two agree to this and quickly Jay realizes that the honesty was what he was missing with his relationship with Sarah and that is probably why he was never able to tell her that he had feelings for her.

Jay has all sorts of problems going on in his life – the loss of his friendship with Sarah because her new boyfriend doesn’t like their friendship and his parents may be on the brink of a divorce.  All this time Sky is there for him, but he never really finds out a lot about her.  He soon finds out that although Sky wants honesty, she is not really honest about her past and why she is going back and forth to Alaska.

When Sky leaves Jay isn’t sure if he is ever going to see her again, but the short time that he spent with her has taught him more about himself and how to act than he will ever know.

This book is a fairly quick read, 29 chapters and just under 200 pages. I had no problem reading it in half of a day.  The story kept me interested and I felt like I was with the characters throughout most of the book.  All the characters were likeable (well, most of them) and you were really rooting for Jameson to find out what he wanted out of life and for things to go his way.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!

About the Book

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums – she’s way more than distraction. Jameson’s falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honesty somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.
