Book Review: The Call by D Hamilton

When I first got The Call in the mail, I was a bit intimidated.  Although the book is small, it is pretty thick and reminded me of a brick.  When I thumbed through it and saw that it had no chapters, I was again concerned.    However, the book is split into parts.  Three of them.

Part one is roughly 100 pages and tells the story of Ishmael O’Donnell, the main character, growing up.  He had a twin brother, Isaac, but he passed away when he was young.  This had a lasting effect on Ishmael.  Ishmael ends up receiving “the call” and goes to seminary school – which is what part two is about.  I made it through part 1 quickly, anxious to figure out what would be happening with Ishmael.

In Part two we go to Seminary with Ishmael and meet some interesting characters, to say the least.  It seems that although Ishmael believes that he has found “the call” the parishioners seem to think otherwise.  He got a few letters from the head of the seminary saying that he needs to work harder and they weren’t really nice letter either.  But Ishmael sticks with it, even missing holidays with his family. (Which hurt his mother greatly as he is now all she has)

We also learn that Ishmael’s father has had an affair, which had led to a child.  He had a paternity suit done and so Ishmael has a half brother.  His father wants nothing to do with the child but Ishmael’s mother wants to bring some child support to the family and sends Ishmael to deliver it. When he arrives he is introduced to his new half brother – Isaac!

This book was really interesting, once I got over the initial intimidation and fact that I had no chapters to stop at.  The characters were really interesting and kept me drawn to the story.

About the Book

Satire and the supernatural blend together in this humorous but disturbing account of divinity and the people who are drawn to answering the call to ministry.

The story is conveyed in the first person through the eyes of Ishmael O’Donnell, an observant young man who wrestles with familial dysfunction, possession by the spirit of his long-dead twin brother, and a quest for purification from both.

The book chronicles the events that lead up to his seeking out seminary as a means of attaining this purification. Upon his arrival at seminary nd his three-year journey through the curriculum, he finds himself engulfed in an unending torrent of duplicity, impertinence and societal abnormalities within a communal setting of characters so driven, tenacious, over-the-top and supercilious, it hurts.

The mocking inner voice of Ishmael’s twin reverberates louder and louder as he desperately tries to come to grips with what is taking place about him, while discovering who he is within the confines of a cloistered setting he finds to be inundated with its own unique form of madness.

And when he finally does obtain the key to his purification… but such things are not revealed second hand.

Kelly Clarkson Stronger Tour January 13

This review may contain spoilers for Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger Tour.  If you’d like to be surprised about the show, it might be best to not read this review.

Friday night Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger Tour kicked off at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT.  For this show I had the best seats I’ve ever had at this venue, about 15 rows from the stage, but off to the left.

I had thought Matt Nathanson would be opening, but at 8:20 a song was playing over the loudspeaker and the ladies next to me informed me it was “her song” (Kelly’s) and the curtain went up and there was a screen around the stage and then a bunch of newspaper clips and headlines scrolled by and it was time for Kelly!

She kicked her set off with what I think is my favorite song off the new album, dark side.  Then she went in to a couple of older singles – Behind These Hazel Eyes and Since U Been Gone.  Before the next song she explained that she did some we’d know to get us into the show, but then was going to do a song she didn’t do that often to make her sister and fans happy and she did hear me, gone and then you love me.

Then she ran off the stage and the screen went around again. Next thing I know she appeared in the crowd and sang Florence and the Machine’s Heavy in Your Arms.  For this tour, each night she is taking a request from twitter – and this is the part of the show where she did it.  Connecticut’s request was from Javier and he requested Cee Lo Green.  She sang “Forget You” and encouraged us all to sing along.  Then she did a medley from her older albums since she had been doing this for 10 years and has 5 albums.

The screen went down again and she came out and said that this song was added to the setlist the night before and that “jesus, lord” there are a lot of songs on the set list! But she wanted to add it anyway.  She said she did a show with Carrie Underwood and Carrie came out and sang this song and she thought that she wished she had a song like it, but she doesn’t, so she is stealing it from Carrie and sang “I know you won’t”

Then Dont You Wanna Stay started coming from the band. I wasn’t sure how she’d do a duet, but Jason Aldean popped up on the screen and sang his parts and Kelly sang hers. It was pretty neat.  Then she did Let Me Down and Already Gone.  She went in to Breakaway which she said was one of her most popular songs and encouraged us all to sing along with her.

Next up a video played with her trip to Africa and she sang a song she was inspired to write while there, which I think was called You Still Wont Know What Its Like.  I loved seeing the the footage from her trip to Africa, the kids were so cute and looked like they were having so much fun!

Then it was time for her single and the title track from the album (and tour), Stronger!  And then she went into My Life Would Suck Without You.
That seemed to be the end of the show – there were chants Kelly! Kelly! and she came back out and did Never Again and said it was one of her favorite songs and sometimes you had to go through bad situations to get good songs – not that it was a good song but it was one of her favorites and she didn’t want to come off as egotistical.  Then she teased about it again before going into a song she wrote when she was 16, Because of You.

The next song, which I figured would be the last, was Mr Know It All.   Except when the song ended, there was some mixing and the song went “mis..mister…mis…” and then Kelly sang out “MISS INDEPENDENT” ! And that was what she finished the set with.

Such a great show, and Kelly can SING.  I can’t believe it has taken me 10 years to finally have seen a full headlining show from her!

After the show, I met up with my Dad who had been gambling and was down about $30.  He brought me over to his new favorite machine and I sat at the one next to it and we figured we’d play for a bit before heading to the car because the parking garage would probably be a mess.  Next thing I know I get 4 bonuses, which means I won the “minor” kitty which was $18 and change.  Then I got 10 bonus spins and somehow ended up being at $72+ after that was done! (I think I had about $15 before I went in to the bonus round)  I played down to $70.25 and ended up taking home $50. Not bad!  My Dad also ended up winning and won about $25 making him down only about $5 for the night – which was also not bad considering he was playing for about 3 hours!

Some photos to come a bit later – I have a bunch to do so I’m not sure when I’ll get around to uploading them!

Book Review & Giveaway: Lifting the Wheel of Karma

Lifting the Wheel of Karma is a book about Joseph Connell, a high school student living in Montana.  He is quite an athlete – so tough in fact that he has to compete against men in his karate competitions rather than other karate students his own age.  Haunted by nightmares, he believes that one of the ways to make them go away is to focus his energy on his karate. He goes in to one of his matches undefeated, but ends up being beaten by a guy named Tom.

On the way home from the match he ends up injured in an alternation with a deer and becomes wheelchair bound having control of only one of his arms.  Joseph decides that he needs to go to the Himalayas in India in order to learn “mind over matter” and teach himself to walk again.  His brother brings him to India and leaves him there to get back to his own family.

Joseph stays there for 3 years, meets a girl that he really likes, but is forced to come back home to Montana when tragedy strikes his family.

This book was a quick and easy read but interesting enough to keep me wanting to read on and with enough plot twists that I never did figure out just what was coming next!   I have *3* paperback copies of this book to give away.  To enter, check out the details at the bottom of this post.

Lifting the Wheel of Karma Book Summary

A Profound Spiritual Journey of Extraordinary Healing and Redemption

Joseph Connell is a gifted high school athlete from Montana, loved deeply by his family, yet tormented by nightmarish visions he can neither explain nor escape.

He believes the answer to what threatens to crush him can be found in the knowledge possessed by a mystical old wise man, who lives deep within the remote Himalayas of India.

If Joseph is ever to find the peace he so desperately seeks, he must get this wise old man to reveal what he truly knows, but that will not be easy…for this sage knows far more than he admits.

A modern tale that harkens back to the myths of antiquity. It takes you on a remarkable journey, while exploring the themes of healing, redemption, forgiveness, sacrifice, and ultimately…peace within.

Paul H. Magid’s Bio:

Paul H. Magid started writing his debut novel, Lifting the Wheel of Karma, twenty-five years ago while still in high school. It took him so long to complete because he tried repeatedly to abandon it, but the work refused to be forsaken. Eventually he realized that sharing this story with the world was, in fact, his Dharma.

Along the way he has worked as a Wall Street financial analyst, a waiter (not a very good one), a Hollywood Agent Trainee, a real estate developer, a summer day camp director, an award winning screenwriter, and independent filmmaker—including his autobiographical film, A Life Unfinished, which screened in The Hamptons International Film Festival.

Walgreens-Express Scripts Dispute

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

If you are like me and have an insurance plan that uses Express Scripts and get your prescriptions at Walgreens, you may know that negotiations between the two have failed and that anyone who had prescriptions at Walgreens is being forced to find a new pharmacy as of January 1, 2012.  If you don’t, or want to read more information, here is a great press release about Walgreens and Express Script

Please note that not everyone with prescriptions at Walgreens will be impacted by this – only if your insurance plan prescriptions are managed by Express Scripts.  Check with your pharmacist to find out for sure if you are impacted.

Walgreens are taking steps to help customers who use their pharmacy continue to use their pharmacies even after the agreement ends. In an effort to help ease the burden, Walgreens are offering a special discount on their Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. For $10 a year, a family membership covers everyone in your immediate family, including a spouse, dependents 22 and younger and pets. Individuals may join for $5. Join and receive discount prices on your prescriptions.

Other benefits include savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and generic medications. Discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies. Bonuses are available when you purchase Walgrens brand products and photofinishing services.

I support Walgreens and am hoping that I can keep my prescriptions in their pharmacy! You can support them too by liking them on Twitter and Facebook.

Book Review: Uninvited Answers

Uninvited Answers is a short story, just over 3000 words. It is certainly a quick read, but it makes an impact.

The book is about Loretta, a real estate agent trying to sell a house.  Loretta believes that the house is a steal, though it needs some work, and can not figure out why it won’t sell.

After a man comes to check the house out and freaks out after heading upstairs alone, Loretta thinks he was crazy and writes him off.  However, after Loretta heads upstairs to check out a doll from the World War II era, and has an interesting encounter of her own, she realizes that maybe Robert wasn’t crazy afterall!

This was definitely a spooky book to read – it doesn’t matter how long it is – if it is frightening I will no doubt freak myself out over it!

About the Book

Uninvited Answers is a short story induces thought and fright. Loretta is an aging real estate agent with a problem and a desire. Loretta has been tasked with selling a house, that for whatever reason, will not sell. But, inside this house lies and answer, it just might not be the one Loretta has hoped for.

Book Review: Bittersweet Surrender by Diann Hunt

Diann Hunt was one of the authors of Smitten, a book I really enjoyed, which is why I chose to read Bittersweet Surrender.  This book follows Carly who owns a spa and has a bit of a sweet tooth. Ok, maybe it’s more than a bit.  When she starts exchanging emails with her childhood crush (and brother’s best friend) and he says that he will be moving back to town, she tries to lose 25 pounds.  Her best friend Scott tries to help her out along the way by taking away all of her chocolate and making her go for walks and runs with him to get her in shape.

Her crush Jake comes to town and everything seems to change.  She’s not sure she is really in love with him, he is rough and doesn’t  take a liking to her advice to making his daughter happy about the move.  Carly’s brother C.J. is in a HUGE gambling debt and Carly doesn’t want to help him out this time (a breast cancer survivor, she is trying to save up for surgery, not to bail her brother out all the time).  C.J.’s marriage is falling apart and a bunch of secrets come out about Scott’s wife and Carly’s best friend Ivy, who passed away in a car accident.

The book is an easy read and quite interesting once you get in to all the drama that starts to unfold.  Will Carly stay with Jake or has her teen crush faded?  It is very easy to relate to Carly and root for her to suceed not only in her love life, but in realizing her self worth and with her spa business as well.  The book is 259 pages and includes some reading questions at the end if you’re reading it in a group!

Book Description

(Katie’s Note – this is the description from Booksneeze. I am not sure why it is spelled Carley and Carly – in the book it is Carly.  And I honestly have no idea who Tom is either. I’m thinking that should be Scott!)

Carly Westlake is living the dream. She spends her days at a spa (okay, so she owns the place), she’s dating a hunk, and she’s surrounded by chocolate—milk chocolate, her favorite—that she uses for the chocolate facials that made her spa famous.

But when long buried secrets threaten Carley’s business and her friendship with business-partner Tom, she fights like crazy to keep the dream—and the illusions—afloat.

It takes a miracle of grace to get Carley to finally make that bittersweet surrender to love and real life.

Review: QwikShower & Giveaway

Sponsored by Tomoson.comQwikShower wipes used to be just for gym class – but not anymore!  They are great pocket sized wipes that are actually the size of a washcloth when opened and unfolded that can go with you anywhere and clean you up in any situation!  Gym class? Yoga? Camping? (In the wilderness or for a front row spot at a concert!)

The wipes are really large and work very similarly to a washcloth, they don’t easily rip or tear (well, they might if you get a bit rough with them).  They smell really fresh and don’t have a scent that boys might be embarrassed to smell like.  They are also wet enough to get the job done, but not too wet that it drips all over (like a washcloth might).

QWIKSHOWER.COM is a small (very small), family owned business originating at Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland.

QwikShower will be giving a pack of wipes to a lucky Concert Katie reader! Simply use the Rafflecopter form below to enter.  If you’d rather not try your luck, you can request a sample for $1 at their website: http://www.qwikshower.com/checkout-free-sample.php
