Book Review: Departures by Robin Jones Gunn

Departures is really 2 books in one. To be quite honest, I chose it because of the cover and it being a suitcase.  Sometimes choosing a book by its cover gets me in trouble. However, in this case it worked out and I quite enjoyed the book(s) and I read it very quickly!

The first story is about Christy and her family going back home to the midwest from California for her grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.  Christy wonders if Matthew, the boy she had a crush on before they moved would be around.  Her mother tells her that he would be and then is shocked when he calls her grandparents house to see if she wants to hang out.  He takes her on a tour of the area, bringing back random memories from school and birthday parties as they go.  It turned out that one of Christy’s friends had told him that Christy liked him years and years ago, but Matthew never reacted to it.  Another old friend, Melissa is in the picture and Christy thinks that Matt may rather be with her, and isn’t sure if she still has feelings for him after all.  Christy then tries for find ways to make sure that she and Matt are alone without Melissa, but once Matt confesses that he likes Christy (and may go to college just an hour away from where she lives on a full scholarship), Christy decides that they should take things slow.  There are other books with Christy as the main character (LOTS actually) so I am curious to see if this relationship is expanded upon in any future works or not!

The second story is about Sierra and her friend Jana, who are going on vacation to her parents cabin along with her brother Gregg and his friend Tim.  In fact, Sierra and Christy are in the airport at the same time and their paths cross!  When their first plane gets canceled due to an airline strike, the kids get their tickets exchanged to a different flight.  In Minnesota with a lot of time to kill, they decide to spend some time at the Mall of America before heading back for their flight.  Only to find out that the flight they were booked to no longer exists with the airline!  They are then forced to stay overnight and get a flight out the next morning.   Jana is excited to see the neighbor boy, Danny, once they arrive at the cabin.  Except that then she and Sierra both start developing feelings for Jana’s brother’s friend Tim!  Jana is torn between Danny and Tim and Sierra is upset that Jana is moving in on Tim when she likes Tim AND Jana has Danny!   The crew go river rafting, cliff jumping and have a fun summer. Although… we never really know who Jana decides to go for!

About The Book

This special collection contains two rare novellas from the summer before Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen met. Rediscover the stories that led Christy and Sierra to discover the gift of true friendship.

Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen cross paths on their way to summer vacations that reveal what a gift it is to have a true Forever Friend.

Now Boarding at Gate 10
After her high school graduation, still aching from Todd’s departure, Christy joins her family on a trip to Wisconsin to visit relatives. While there, she reunites with Matthew, an old friend from junior high. When Matthew starts to show a romantic interest in Christy, she realizes this summer vacation could change everything she thought her future would be.

In the Event of a Water Landing
Fifteen-year-old Sierra Jensen can’t wait to spend her summer vacation with her friend Jana at a pristine lake in Montana. But when they arrive, it becomes clear that Jana’s only interest is acquiring a boyfriend. Sierra just wants to hang out with the guys as friends, but Jana turns every encounter into a possible romantic relationship. As their friendship begins to suffer, Sierra wonders if it’s possible to find a Forever Friend who will listen to you, laugh with you, and keep your confidences.

2gether Reunion?

In High School, my favorite boyband was 2gether.  Sure I was a huge NSYNC fan as well, and an on and off Backstreet Boys fan, and known to wear retro New Kids on the Block shirts every now and then and sometimes randomly burst out in to O-Town songs in the hallway…. but 2gether was my absolute favorite.  I’m not sure why, because they were a “fake” band put together by MTV to MOCK the boyband phenomenon, but they ended up catching on and besides being a mockumentary movie they also got their own TV show.  Unfortunately the TV show ended abruptly after the death of youngest member Michael Cuccione (who played Jason “QT” McKnight)

Recently, Alex Solowitz (who played Mickey Parke) posted on his Facebook page that he had lunch with Kevin Farley (who portrayed Doug Linus) and that they had discussed getting back together. (2gether?)  They called up Noah Bastian (Kevin’s TV brother Chad Linus) and he was on board too. All that was missing was Evan Farmer (heartthrob Jerry O’Keefe) and he was away.  Once he came back, he was on board as well.

The only problem – was MTV on board?  Could they do something without MTV being on board and still use the 2gether name and songs?  The guys want to reunite for a “final” show in LA, with proceeds from the show going to the Michael Cuccione Make A Difference Foundation.  Of course, I’d like for them to do a show on each coast – Los Angeles and New York City because I’m not sure how I’ll figure out how to get out to Los Angeles for a one-off show.

The guys through their facebook and twitter pages have tried to get fans to rally and let them know that we want 2gether back!  There have been twitter trending attempts, posting on MTV’s website, facebooks and twitter pages and contacting whatever news outlets we can.

A LOT of news outlets picked up on things early on and more recently MTV has posted about “2gether reuniting?” We want the ? changed to a ! “2gether reuniting!” with MTV on board – maybe in conjunction with a  re-release of 2gether the movie on DVD (Which has sold on ebay for upwards of $100 when it appears, due to it going out of print so quickly) and the series on DVD. (It is only a few episodes but I can’t find my recordings of it so this on DVD would make me very very happy)

I even started up my old 2gether website again… so if you are a fan of 2gether and want to be kept up to date on the reunion progress as well as some of the projects the guys have been working on as well – be sure to check out www.2gethergalaxy.com!

LG Doublelplay

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of LG DoublePlay™ for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Are you in the market for a new phone? I am!  One of the phones I have been checking out is the LG Doubleplay.  It has two touch screens that can operate separately or together, it comes with a full keyboard and it has Swype! I’ve never had a phone with Swype before, but it seems like it makes typing out words so much easier!  It also allows you to multitask – something I am always doing!  You can be updating your facebook page and be checking out something on the web, sending a text or even an email!

The LG Doubleplay comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recorder.  Share your pictures and video via text messaging, email or even facebook!  I don’t know about you, but I am constantly on my phone via facebook and sharing content on the go – especially live concert shots that I like to post while the show is going on.  This would be no problem with the LG DoublePlay™!

You can also send and receive texts from your PC or Tablet or create group chats on the go for more efficient content sharing!  I don’t send as many texts as some people out there, but I love the idea of the group chats – there are always multiple text conversations going on when it is time to plan the details for the next concert road trip!

LF Doubleplay features Andriod 2.3 (Gingerbread) with access to the Android Market and you can customize the phone with 7 home screens and up to nine short cuts for one-touch navigation.

The LD Doubleplay is the ultimate social networking and multitasking handset, it comes with a full QWERTY keyboard and the touch screens make multi tasking so easy, which is why it has made my list of possible replacement phones for me!

(The LG Doubleplay is available exclusively at T-Mobile)

How do you think that the LG Doubleplay would change the way you text? How many hours do you spend texting and using social network sites on your phone?  Leave a comment and let me know – how do you think the LG Doubleplay would change the way you interact on social networks and send texts?

Healthy Eating For Kids

Are your children picky eaters? Are you trying to add more variety to their diet but aren’t sure how? Look no further than Healthy Eating For Kids – a new recipe book containing 60 recipes which have fun names and appeal to your children’s imagination.

“Healthy Eating For Kids” was written with the busy family in mind. Most recipes can be prepared in 15 minutes or less, which is less time than you might spend waiting in line for a hamburger and fries.

The recipes break down to 6 different categories including:
-Snacks
-Drinks
-Lunch at Home
-Packed Lunches for School
-Evening Meals at Home
-Desserts

While I don’t have any children, I could probably benefit from eating a bit healthier myself, and I am looking forward to using some of these recipes for my lunches at work! I read a review at ANIPOTS on the book, and I think it will be right up my alley. I particularly enjoyed the Bacon and Egg Salad, Open-Faced Quesadillas and Tuna Fish in Pita Pockets (I forgot how fun pita pockets were!) and am looking forward to trying to make the Banana Milkshake and Taco Stuffed Potatoes! (as well as some others as well but I won’t bore you with my lunch wish list!)

Each recipe is designed to include vitamins, minerals and macronutrients that your child needs to stay healthy, strong, focused and energetic. We’ve put an emphasis on ideas that:
-Are healthy
-Contain nutrients that are difficult to add to a child’s diet

Book Review: Iris & Dragonflies

Iris and the Dragonflies is a middle grade fantasy novel by Rosemary Danielis.  It tells the story of Iris, who appears to be just a regular school girl, but it is revealed that she can talk to Dragonflies.  When her local creek (her favorite spot to talk to the dragonflies) is in danger, she steps up and tries to stop to company who wants to develop there and to save the creek.

Also, on a trip to Ireland during school vacation, she heads to Ireland to visit her grandmother.  There she finds a dragon tooth – proof that dragons exist. She also ends up finding out that she is a Dragon Seer and can talk to dragons too!

Other sub plots in the story revolve around Iris and her life at school – she has just one friend, Grace, and they can hear each other talking even when they aren’t right next to each other.  The next year in school, a lot of new students join the class and it turns out that there is a whole group of them who can hear each other and now Grace and Iris have more friends than just each other.

The story is obviously aimed at children much younger than me, but I thought that it was a great story and fun to follow.  It also showed about how anyone can make a difference – even if they are only 11 years old and in school and also the importance of friendship. (And as the author says – the magic within us!)

For more information, check out the book’s website: http://www.irisandthedragonflies.com/Iris_and_the_Dragonflies/Iris

There is also a great promotion going on with this book – for every copy sold, one copy will be donated to charity! Find out more on the Facebook event page:

Book Review: Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin

When I first read the title of this book, Wonderland Creek, and then saw that the main character’s name was Alice, I was expecting that this book would end up being some sort of Alice in Wonderland spin off.  I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn’t, but also when Alice who narrates the book commented herself about how it was like she was in Wonderland and related some of the characters in Acorn, KY to those in Alice in Wonderland.  (The creek just so happens to really be named Wonderland Creek).

In the beginning, we meet Alice (who goes by Allie) who works at the Library and always has her nose in a book. (Sounds kind of familiar… do I know anyone like that? hmm.)  When her boyfriend catches her reading a book at a funeral of one of the locals, he gets upset with her and tells her how she doesn’t have a life outside of books and ultimately ends up breaking up with her. (One of the reasons for the breakup is that she had an “episode” of sorts at the movie theater and told everyone how she didn’t like how the movie changed the book so much.  Not that I go off at movie theaters, but I often do make the same comparisons!)

Allie decides that she should get away and decides to deliver the books she has been collecting for a needy community herself. She had been communicating with the librarian there, Leslie MacDougall and doesn’t think it would be a problem for her to stay a few nights while her Aunt and Uncle go off to a spa, dropping her off and picking her back up on their way through the town.  Allie is pleasantly surprised when Leslie, whom she thought was a woman, is actually a man that goes by ‘Mack’ and that there are no restaurants or hotels in the small town of Acorn. (Or electricity or running water or indoor plumbing!)

Mack ends up getting shot early on in Allie’s visit, and she learns of a lot of strange things that happen in the town of Acorn.  The mine which had helped everyone make a living closed down so many people were poor.  There was also a HUGE fued going on between two of the main families in town – the Arnetts and the Larkins.  This was over some money that was apparently buried by an Arnett and a Larkin.  Each family believes the other family has already found and spent the money.  Mack also believes that an accident at the mine killing one of his best friends was not an accident at all.

Mack ends up faking his death really early on in the book and Allie has to help tend to the library, garden, etc at the home as well as Miss Lillie who is nearing 100 years old and has raised Mack as her own since she was his mother’s midwife and his mother died during childbirth.

The book is 35 chapters long and quite a good read, though it did take me a few days to get through it.  All throughout the book Allie talks about how she is going to head back home – but something ends up making her stay a little longer each time. (One being that her Aunt and Uncle were sent home when they first came to pick her up!)  Lillie believes that God sent Allie to Acorn for a reason and intends to find out why.  The town does end up finding out why, but I’ll leave that up to you to figure out once you start reading 🙂

About the book

I was perfectly content with my life–that is, until the pages of my story were ripped out before I had a chance to live happily ever after.

Alice Grace Ripley lives in a dream world, her nose stuck in a book. But the happily-ever-after life she’s planned on suddenly falls apart when her boyfriend breaks up with her, accusing her of living in a world of fiction instead of the real one. To top it off, Alice loses her beloved library job because of cutbacks due to the Great Depression.

Longing to run from small-town gossip, Alice flees to the mountains of eastern Kentucky to deliver five boxes of donated books to the tiny coal-mining town of Acorn, a place with no running water, no electricity, and where the librarians ride ornery horses up steep mountain passes to deliver books. When Alice is forced to stay in Acorn far longer than she planned, she discovers that real-life adventure, mystery–and especially romance–may be far better than her humble dreams could have imagined.
