Book Review: The boy who came back from heaven by Kevin & Alex Malarkey

I was drawn to this book because I had thought that I saw the boy this book is about on the news.  However, when the book arrived I realized that it was actually a different story that I had seen on the news and the fact that there are now (at least) 2 boys who are claiming to have met God… is pretty fascinating in and of itself.

This book was a quick and easy read and was incredibly interesting.  It is roughly 200 pages and I finished it in 1 sitting in about 2 hours.

The book tells the story from the perspectives of Kevin and Alex Malarkey.  When Alex was 6, he and his father get in to a terrible auto accident and many believed that Alex had died.  However, paramedics heard a slight heartbeat and he was helicoptered away to a Children’s Hospital while Kevin was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out.

Kevin was actually on the phone with his wife at the time of the crash, who was home with their 3 children – one of which who had been born just 2 days previous!  Fortunately, she assumed that he was just in an area without much reception and did not hear the crash occurring.

Each chapter we hear Kevin’s perspective and at the end, Alex tells what he was going through at the time.  He tells about how he went to Heaven but could not see God’s face because if you see his face, you die.  He tells about Jesus being with him as he watched what was going on at the accident scene.  He tells about how angels removed Kevin from the car during the accident and how the devil told him that the accident was his fault. Alex tries to describe Heaven to the best of his abilities – but it seems like it is more of a “you have to see it to believe it” type of place.  All of this time, Alex’s Army were praying for him as Alex was in a coma and was internally decapitated.

The story is truly captivating and amazing. Inserted in to each chapter are also a few paragraphs from people who were at the scene of the accident, who were praying for Alex or attended his church, etc with their thoughts on everything that was going on.

(For anyone interested – the other boy has also written a book which is called “Heaven Is For Real” I have not read it yet but it would be interesting to see how his descriptions of Heaven are similar/different to Alex’s!)

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale Publisher’s in order to write this review.

Rock N Roll Fridays – Sting

1. DESERT ROSE: This desert flower, no sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this…
What is your favorite scent?

Raspberry.

2. EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE: Every move you make, every vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I’ll be watching you.
Ever stalked or researched an old flame?

Facebook makes it all too easy.

3. IF I EVER LOSE MY FAITH IN YOU: I never saw no miracle of science
that didn’t go from a blessing to a curse…
What product did you buy that didn’t do what it claimed?

I am thinking there’s got to be something… or multiple somethings, but I can’t think of anything off the top of my head.

4. IF YOU NEED SOMEBODY SET THEM FREE: If you need somebody, call my name.
If you want someone, you can do the same…
Do you have a nickname or have you been called something other than your given name?

Katie is a nickname… Concert Katie is a nickname… and then my mom has various names for me if I am being good or bad lol

5. WE WORK THE BLACK SEAM: One day in a nuclear age they may understand our rage. They build machines that they can’t control and bury the waste in a great big hole…
What do you do that is considered “Green”?

I try to avoid printing excess things if I can help it, I re-use my desk calendars as scrap paper to make my to-do lists on… I try to use reusable shopping bags. In the grand scheme of things – probably not ENOUGH… but at least I try and do something.

6. MOON OVER BOURBON STREET: It was many years ago that I became what I am, I was trapped in this life like an innocent lamb…
What was the worst job you ever had?

7. I BURN FOR YOU… In peace we sleep entwined and your love flows through me. Though an ocean soothes my head, I burn for you…
What is the worst thing about sleeping with someone else in a bed?

I tend to flop around a lot in my sleep – I’ll wake up twisted in my sheets and I honestly don’t know what the heck I do to end up that way.  When I share a bed I try extra hard to not move so I am rarely comfortable and rarely get a decent nights sleep.

8. FORTRESS AROUND YOUR HEART: And if I built this fortress around your heart,Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire, then let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm…
What object or piece of furniture have you built?

Not usually.

10. FIELDS OF GOLD: I never made promises lightly, and there have been some that I’ve broken. But I swear in the days still left we’ll walk in the fields of gold…
What was the last promise you made?

I can’t recall.

11. CONSIDER ME GONE: To search for perfection is all very well, but to look for Heaven is to live here in Hell. After today, consider me gone…
What was the worst way you ever broke up in a relationship?

Nothing really stands out.

Karaoke Battle USA Taping

This post is going to be a bit vague as far as contestants because we were at the final taping from the East auditions so we know who is moving on and I don’t want to spoil anything.  When the show airs, I’ll post again 🙂

We got the the Gramercy Theater about an hour early, and there were maybe 5 other people waiting in line.  People from the earlier taping were leaving and we realized that they had been in there about 4 hours based on the time they were supposed to arrive.

Carnie Wilson is one of the judges and she walked by us and then a few minutes later Joey and one of the other judges walked out.  The girl in front of us in line called Joey over and he gave her a hug and talked to her a bit, but I just stared at him rather than saying anything! He had on a TON of makeup for the cameras.

When we were first let in, we asked about ADA seating (the tickets changed their tune and rather than seeming like they were discriminating it said to call for ADA seating – not sure why they had that write up to begin with because the audience just had to sit there and clap/cheer/sing along which is all I would have expected needing to do at a taping)  We were first placed off to the side and told they were re-setting the floor.    Then we were placed 2 seats in on the last row where the contestants were.  Then we were moved over 2 more seats.  This was a good view – but kind of weird to be in with the contestants.   (Although at this point we were all alone)  Finally, they realized they had just enough chairs for contestants and we had to go up the stairs to the stadium seating with the supporters and rest of the crowd.  I don’t know if they had a new crew for each city, or never had anyone needing seating anywhere else but it was a bit unorganized.  But they did apologize every time we were moved.

The audience just hung around for a while and then the contestants showed up (60 of them) We were the final show, so we would find out the Top 2 boys and Top 2 girls and then they would all sing and the top girl and guy would advance the LA.

Joey came out and was joking around and telling stories.  It always seemed like he was about to tell a really good story when one of the crew guys would cut him off so he could record his part.  Most of the stories he did end up finishing though.  He was making fun of Lance and Backstreet Boys (he said it was ok because he is friends with them), he talked a bit about how on the red carpet it was hard to concentrate because he had 2 people  talking in his ear, he was talking to a celeb and trying to come up with questions and pay attention to everything all at once (and that Lisa Rinna, though he likes her, would always talk about how ‘Wait someone is screaming in my ear!” and that he must be stupid to have been able to handle all that going on at once), talked a bit about how he was Tigger and a Country Bear at Disney…  And how one of the guys on the red carpet wasn’t nice to him so he kind of insulted him and then the next time he was nice haha

He recorded the opening several different times because they didn’t know if it would be the first show airing or if it would be later on in the season. (ABC says it starts on Mondays, the guy at the taping said it would air on Fridays so I have no idea who to believe at this point)

The judges were introduced and walked through the crowd… They spent FOREVER and a day taking close up shots of the judges on the stage (Did they really need an audience for that? Especially since Carnie kept telling the contestants to stop making her laugh!)

When Joey was announcing the Top 4  – they had to pause for like 5 minutes and get serious shots of everyone.  At first, this didn’t bother me since I had no idea who any of the contestants were so I wasn’t invested in them.  However, when it came time to announce the top girl and guy there were certain ones that I liked better so that time of the reaction shots was TORTURE! I can only imagine how the contestants felt.

The 4 contestants all sang a full song and then the judges talked about the performance. To be honest I thought one of the performances was pretty blah, but the judges all loved it.  The other 3 were really good though, I thought.

And the top guy announcement – they had to do TWICE! So he had to pretend the second time around he was still shocked and excited! (Which he probably was, but still lol the magic of television!)

We got in about 3pm and were let out just before 7.  I have to say, it was WAY too long to keep the audience and when people tried to sneak out they were told they couldn’t have any movement in the back. I’m not even sure the back area will EVER be on camera – I think you will just assume the audience was just the contestants, but I guess I’ll see next month when it airs.

Overall it was fun, but it just ended up being a really long day!

Pretty Little Liars #9 – Twisted

The newest book in the Pretty Little Liars series, Twisted, is out today.  Sara Shepard is writing 3 more books in addition to Twisted to add on to the end of the book series which has turned in to a hit ABC Family TV Show.

If you’d like to check out what the book is all about before you buy it – you can preview it at Harper Teen:

http://browseinside.harperteen.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780062081018

The book takes place when the Pretty Little Lairs – Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hanna are seniors in high school and while the mystery surrounding A and Alison has been solved, it looks like the girls are getting themselves in to trouble once again!

I am very much so looking forward to reading the last 4 books in this series – though it will be interesting to see how everything plays out – it might get a bit confusing to be reading it while the TV show is airing since the plot lines are not the same from the first 8 books to the TV show.

Platinum Hit – Episode 5

This week there were 8 contestants left and the hook that the contestants had to write was for a love song.  Jewel also announced that the winner of this hook challenge would have a HUGE advantage in the group round.  Of course, Jes’ song was about Johnny and that was announced to everyone. Which led Nick to be his superficial jerky self and say that Johnny went for the girl who was the least cute in all of the competition.  Hey Nick, did you ever think that maybe Johnny likes Jes for MORE than just how she looks?  Maybe that is why your past relationships didn’t work out for you!

The guest judge for the week was Ryan Tedder of One Republic.

Sonyae won the hook challenge with Nick coming in second and Jes’ ode to Johnny coming in 3rd.  The advantage that Sonyae got was that not only did she get to choose her entire team, she got to choose the other team as well! This would pretty much guarantee that she would win the best song this week.

Sonyae chose Scotty and Brian for herself because she thinks they are awesome, but also because they were Nick’s dream team.  For Nick, she chose Johnny and Jackie because she wanted to split up Jes / Johnny and because they don’t like Nick.  (But really I am not sure anyone does like Nick, he is talented but so difficult to work with and SUCH a jerk!) And Jes got stuck with Melissa.

During the writing round, Jewel came by to announce that one of the members of the winning team would be singled out to win immunity for the following week.

Jes ended up getting sick during the writing session and as usual, Melissa didn’t do much to help out the team.  It was obvious that they’d be coming in last.  Sonyae’s song won and Sonyae was singled out as the member of the team to get immunity for next week.  Nick’s song came in second but they did not like aspects of it because it was not realistic.  The song included 3 people – Nick, his ex, and his current girlfriend.  The current girlfriend and ex have a converation in the song which is what they felt would NEVER happen.  The idea was kind of cool, but it was poorly executed.  I also felt like the judges had more criticism for the song than anything else, but I guess Jes’ song was just THAT bad!

Melissa ended up going home – finally!  She didn’t think she deserved to – but I beg to differ.  It seemed like she was being carried along by her team week by week and it was only a matter of time before she got exposed.  Melissa said in her exit interview that she did not have the things and people around her that inspire her – but I feel like as a good song writer you should be able to find inspiration in anything, anywhere.  The other contestants didn’t seem to have problems finding inspiration from the location they were in!  I am sure that she will do ok for herself and continue her career in music, but the competition was just not for her.

Platinum Hit airs Mondays at 10pm EST on BRAVO.
