Book Review: Thank You Notes by Jimmy Fallon

If you watch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, then you probably have seen his “Thank You Cards” segment where he thanks random items.  He has recently released a book that compiles a lot of the thank you notes written by him and the Late Night staffers.

The book was released May 23, 2011 and retails for $12, but is onsale right now for $6.60 at Amazon.com! (Free shipping with Amazon Prime) It quickly made it to number 1 on Amazon as well.

The book is a pretty quick read, it is 176 pages and has roughly 180 thank you notes in it.  Some of them I totally agreed with and completely cracked up over.

A couple of my favorites were to the ants, for making his life start with murder every morning.  We’ve been having an ant invasion lately so I definitely could related to that! Also his thank you to the DVR Remote for not fast forwarding right away when he hits the button and then going back to the beginning of the program.  Definitely another one that I could relate to.

If you are looking for a quick pick-me-up and enjoy Jimmy Fallon’s humor, then I definitely recommend that you pick up “Thank You Notes”!

I purchased this book for myself and enjoyed it and decided to share about it. I was not compensated for this review in any way.

Platinum Hit – Episode 2

In the second episode of Platinum Hit, the 11 remaining contestants had to write a hook for a DANCE song.  The guest judge for this task was, appropriately enough, Donna Summer.  The contestants were all supplied the same beat and had 30 minutes to write their hook.  The top 3 hooks would be the captains for the team round.

Once again, I was a little surprised with the choices – but the Top 3 were Scotty, Karen and Brian.  Donna Summer told Karen that she liked that her song was an anthem and that if she tapped in to woman empowerment, she could have a hit.  Donna also liked that Brian’s hook was unique.  Since Brian won – he was able to use the original beat while the other 2 teams would have to adapt their hooks/songs to something new.

Meanwhile, in the team rounds… Nick sulked because he did not win.  Scotty chose him because he knows he is a great writer and then there was some drama over Nick not liking people and not wanting to make friends because he wants to win.  Nick’s cockiness is really getting old – though he is talented.   But crying because you didn’t win a challenge? Come on! Jackie and Jes convinced Brian to let Jes sing on their song… and Karen’s song seemed to fall flat from the anthem that it seemed she had going during the hook round.

After playing the songs for a club – Scotty’s song won and Karen and Brian’s song were the bottom. Although the judges did not like that Brian was not singing on the song, the team was safe for the week.  Karen’s team would be losing a member and unfortunately it was the Connecticut contestant, Blessing.

Platinum Hit airs Monday nights on Bravo at 10pm EST.

Mixbook Softcover Photo Book

My Dad loves taking photos when he goes away on vacation, but most of the time the photos never end up being printed.  He’ll hook his camera up to the TV to show us the photos when he gets back, transfer them on to his computer and then that is it.

I like to try and do fun things with his photos for holidays, in the past I have taken some of his photos and made him a calendar for him to hang up near his desk at work.

For Father’s Day this year, I decided to make him a Photobook from Mixbook.com.  I didn’t have the time to make a full fledged scrapbook from scratch – and digital scrapbooking is definitely the next best thing! Especially when you have a website that does almost all the work for you! 😉

When he was at work, I logged into my Mixbook account and uploaded his vacation photos in to my account so that I could make the book without him knowing about it. I took photos from his trips to Seattle, Las Vegas, Delaware and New York City to see the Knicks.  I tried to include a variety of photos, though some of the trips he did not take many pictures.

I used MixBook’s Father’s Day themed book and was able to add in the pictures and modify the pages to work with what I was trying to accomplish.  I created a nice 21 paged 8 x 6 digital scrapbook for him, in essentially no time! Mixbook had a TON of themed books to choose from, each book having several different types of layouts and “stickers” that you could add to each page.  I am such a sucker for stickers, I loved that they had this feature for their digital scrapbooks!

I ordered the book on May 23rd and it arrived by May 28th! I was incredibly impressed with the shipping time and the book looks AWESOME.  Fortunately, my Dad doesn’t read my blog (at least, not that I know of!) so I have been able to post a few photos of the pages without completely ruining the surprise for him.

Be sure to check out Mixbook.com to see all they have to offer.  You can also ‘Like’ Mixbook on Facebook and Follow Mixbook on Twitter!

Mixbook is offering a 20% off coupon to my readers on their next Mixbook purchase.  Simply use the code “TOMOSON20” during check out.  The code does not expire but will only work once per person.

Book Review: Survival of the Smartest

Aaron Turpen has written a great book – Survival of the Smartest The First 72 Hours.  The book will help get you prepared for natural disasters and what to do in the first 72 Hours or 3 days after they strike.

The book is short, only 49 pages, but is chock full of excellent information.  The first chapter is titled “If You Read Nothing Else In This Book, Read This Chapter” and it is a quick overview of everything that is covered in the book to help you be prepared.

The chapters that follow expand more on the points that he briefly discusses in chapter 1 including – Keeping Your Hear During Emergency Situations, Shutting Off Utilities in An Emergency & Specific Disaster Situations.

Also included in the book are some photos, which for me always helps make a point and also helps to break up the pattern of completely text pages.  Chapters are also broken down in to specific points so if you know that a tornado for instance might be coming your way – you can easily reference the section on preparing for a tornado and knowing what to do to try and prepare for it to keep yourself safe.

Reading the book made me realize just how unprepared I would be for any of the situations presented in this book!  I have no 72 hour bag, no in-home disaster kit or anything in place!  A lot of times you think “it won’t happen to me” but you really should be prepared for everything.  Who would have thought that tornadoes would have been ravaging New England? Not many, yet it happened here recently.  I definitely need to re-evaluate things and get some plans put in place.

David Cook Acoustic Cafe 6/8/11

Wednesday evening David Cook performed as a part of TIC 96.5’s acoustic cafe in Hartford, CT.  The show was fairly brief, only 4 songs, though the crowd was begging him for more.  At one point there was a discussion on how many more songs the crowd wanted him to do and someone yelled out “A LOT!” He asked what a lot meant.

He also mentioned if someone got Neal a beer that they would hang around longer.  Beers quickly made their way up to the stage, but the next song was their final song – The Last Goodbye, David’s latest single. (Such a tease, that David!)

After the set we took photos with David.  Unfortunately what started out as pairs in photos turned in to group photos.  I had specifically not asked anyone as my guest so I could have a photo with just me and David.  Fortunately though, my friend Lauren had also won and took Christine along so it was them that I was in the photo with – and not 2 strangers!

I had on my I <3 Tulsa shirt that I had gotten back in 2009 on my first trip to Tulsa and David told me that he liked it.  (He lived in Tulsa for a bit before auditioning for Idol!)  He told me to go find Neal and show him the shirt as well, but we couldn’t find him and then once we did see him he was chatting with some others and we were waiting for our dinner to arrive so I didn’t want to go bother him.

Black & White Letter Images

I was recently sent an incredible amount (250+) of black & white letters from photographer Jodi Gerber of Artistic Letters.  For the past 3 years she has been compiling these letters – all by taking photos of objects in nature that resembled letters of the alphabet.

The combinations you can make of even the same word over and over seem to be endless with all the variations of letters!  So far I have done 2 projects with the letters, but I definitely have ideas for many, many more projects!

My first project was a scrapbook page for when I met Tom Felton.  Tom plays Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series so I decided to print out letters to spell out “Felton” and “Malfoy” to border the top and bottom of the page.  As you can see, while both names have some of the same letters in them – I was able to choose a different photo to represent each letter (and still had several others that I did not choose available to me)

My second project was wall art.  For now, I have just printed out the letters and stuck them on my bedroom wall, but I do plan on framing them.  I am just not sure if I should do an individual frame for each letter, or perhaps two long frames with a custom mat separating each of the letters, or something else.  I opted to print the letters out at approximately 3×5, but the images are large enough that I could have gone up to at least 8×10 without having any loss of quality.

Jodi has decided to offer her ENTIRE catalog of 250+ letter images to the public on CD or Download so that anyone can create their own design.  I used the letters for a scrapbook layout and for wall art but you could also use them for greeting cards, wedding invitations, baby’s birth and anything else that you can possibly think of that would require letters!

Jodi teamed up with ConcertKatie and is offering readers Exclusive Discounted Pricing of up to $6 Off!  Please visit her website www.BuyAlphabetPhotos.com and browse the images, testimonials, and ideas.
