My favorite blogging “tool”

During the course of my blogging, I use quite a few items that can be considered tools or aids for blogging.

My scanner – to scan ticket stubs, backstage passes, autographs and postcards.  It recently stopped working properly and I have to jump through hoops to get it to work – but I don’t think I’d be lost without it.

My memory card reader(s) – The one for my “big camera” I can never remember where I put it.  Then I have one for my smaller camera that doesn’t properly fit into the PC’s USB drive. I have to use an octopus USB hub for it to work.  Not my favorite.

My phone – I have a wordpress app and I have blogger set up to post via email in case I am on the go and really, really need to post something. This is not my favorite way to post.

My computers – I have a Gateway desktop PC and I have a Mac laptop.  While I would probably be lost without them (and forced to do everything via phone – yikes!) these are also not my favorite.

Photoshop – How do you think I get that cute little kick drum and guitar on everything?  It is a brush I made in photoshop!  Plus I can crop images, resize them, basically do whatever the heck I want.  But I am not that good with photoshop (yet) so this is not my favorite!

My Flip – My video camera! Lots of fun! Except that everything has to be done on my laptop because my USB port on my PC doesn’t have enough room for it. Unlike the memory card reader, I can’t use the octopus hub because it doesn’t have enough power.

So just what is my favorite tool?  You’re probably going to think my favorite tool is silly. But I seriously would be lost without it.  Occasionally it  falls on the floor or under my desk and I go absolutely insane looking for it.  It’s a calendar.

A calendar! A 2011 calendar from Disney Movie Club.  I previously had one in 2010 too.  I quit the movie club though so I’m not sure what I will do for 2012.  I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.  There are dates circled on my calendar.  These are days I have gone to concerts.  This is so I can keep track not only for this blog, but for my scrapbook to make sure I have everything in date order and didn’t skip any shows.  When I want to schedule a series of blog posts every Tuesday, I can quickly see what dates I want to use.  When I want to have a post every weekday and I am several weeks in advance (postcard blog) I can figure it all out with my calendar!

Of course,  I can use the calendar on my computer but I like holding it and running my finger along the week or day columns to figure everything out.  I don’t like running my finger across my computer screen.  It will either end up covered in dust (ha) and/or leave a streak on the screen that will bother me every time I see it.

Lee DeWyze Sacred Heart Fairfield, CT

Wednesday night American Idol winner Lee DeWyze performed at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.  I won tickets from KC101 and met up with my friend Kat to wait in line.  We got there around 3:20 and saw that no one else was in line so we decided we might as well start the line and grabbed the chairs out of the back of my car!  Not too long after we were joined by Stacey and Jamie and the line just began to continuously get longer and longer.  But we would be front row!

It was pretty cold out and was snowing, but fortunately we were covered. At first I had thought that we’d have to just sit outside in the snow and freeze, so I was really happy when I saw that we’d be in a covered walkway. At least then it wouldn’t be quite as cold.  At 6:30 we packed up our chairs and waited for doors at 7pm.  (Which of course opened a bit later than that!)
As expected, we got front row 🙂  Although there was a huge space between the stage and the seats.  I was a bit concerned that people would rush the stage and take front row away from us, but fortunately everyone stayed in their seats!

The opening act was Jeff LeBlanc.  His name looked very familiar to me and I think that he was in the OurStage contest to open up for Hanson in Sayreville, NJ last July.  But I couldn’t remember if he was one of the good performers or the bad.  I enjoyed his set though, so he must have been one of the good ones!  At one point he was recording and looping different guitar parts so the song would sound,  I guess fuller, and that is always pretty cool.

Then there was a VERY short break (it was like 5 minutes and I was kind of shocked that it was so fast) and it was time for LEE!  He walked out with a little pedestal and put his root beer on it and then his bottles of water, all while singing along with the intro music that was playing.

He started his set with Earth Stood Still.  I’ve only listened to his album a handful of times so for the most part everything was new to me.  It was easy to tell which songs were his singles because they seemed to have the loudest sing-a-longs.  There was a lot of “I LOVE YOU LEE!” going on in the middle of songs and responded to each one.  One was a guy and he just laughed and said he wanted to meet that guy and that he loved that guy. At one point a small girl (4 or 5 years old I’d say) yelled out that she loved him and he had to stop playing and he was like “seriously?” It was cute.

During one of his last songs, I think it was Naked As We Came, he broke a string on his guitar.  Apparently he only had one guitar with him so Jeff had to give him his guitar to finish the show! He commented that Jeff was much taller than he was.  Then it was time for his “last song” Beautiful Like You, his newest single.

After that he walked off the stage for about a second and then came back out for an encore and joked about how he didn’t really sell that well.  And he finished out the set with Hallelujah.  He had called everyone to come up front for that song but unfortunately everyone rushed down there before I even had the chance to jump up and claim my spot against the stage! That’s ok though, I probably would have been trampled if I tried.

We decided we’d go to see if we could find where he was going to leave from and found the door to backstage and then around the corner saw a crowd of people waiting.  A woman came out and said they were at the wrong door and a second later one of the security guys peaked out of another door nearby.  We all went near that door and I was leaning against the wall right next to it and who pops out but Lee!  He said he would have liked to hang but they had to get a flight to Iowa in a couple of hours so he had to head out right away.  He took a couple of photos and gave a few handshakes and hugs before heading back in the door.  We wandered around a bit longer and security was asking for the hallway to be clear so of course we knew that meant he’d be leaving that way.  And he did.  He said bye to us all again down the hall and then went out the door.  Security wouldn’t let anyone follow him out the door.

I went in to the day not really being a big Lee fan – but now I love him. Many thanks to Kat and Stacey for showing me the error of my ways!

1. Gimme Some Truth “I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, shortsighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
What is one undeniable truth in your life?
I get easily overwhelmed.

2. Instant Karma “Why in the world are we here?
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on Earth are you there
When you’re everywhere
Gonna get your share
Why in the world do you think you are here?
I wish I knew the answer to that!
3. Out of the Blue “Out the blue you came to me
And blew away life’s misery”
Has anyone ever came out of the blue for you?
Maybe Hanson. Yesterday was my 14 year Hanson faniversary. LOL
4. Jealous Guy “I didn’t mean to hurt you
I’m sorry that I made you cry
Oh no, I didn’t want to hurt you
I’m just a jealous guy”
Tell us about a time when you were jealous.I am sure there have been times but I can’t think of anything specific right now.
5. Mind Games “We’re playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the Mantra peace on earth”
When was the last time someone played mind games with you?
I am paranoid so I feel like someone is ALWAYS playing mind games with me lol
6. Imagine “Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger a brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing for the world”
What’s your favorite possession?
My computer(s) I guess…
7. Working Class Hero “They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be”
How did you get along in high school?
I didn’t really fit in in highschool, though I did not get picked on quite as much as I did in Middle School… I had my core group of friends and I pretty much just stuck with them.
8. I’m Stepping Out “Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta get out
I’m stepping out, babe
Just a while
Ain’t been out for days”
When was the last time you went out on the town? What did you do?
Well I went to a concert 2 nights ago, does that count? If so.. went to see Lee DeWyze.  Technically I saw him do 2 shows that day.. and met him.. I guess twice. Depends on your definitions lol
9. Steel and Glass “Well, your mouthpiece squawks as he spreads your lies
But you can’t pull strings if your hands are tied, hey, hey”
Who was the last person who spread lies about you?Hmm.. this was probably done in high school or middle school so I am trying to forget about it lol
10. God “God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain”
How do you conceive “god”?
I don’t
11. I’m Losing You “Here in some stranger’s room,
Late in the afternoon,
What am I doing here at all?”
Have you ever cheated on a lover or been cheated on?
Never cheated and as far as I know I’ve never been cheated on but who really knows… not me.
12. Whatever Gets You Through the Night “Whatever gets you through your life ‘salright, ‘salright
Do it wrong or do it right ‘salright, ‘salright
Don’t need a watch to waste your time oh no, oh no”

Sleeping 😉
13. Give Peace a Chance “Everybody’s talkin’ ’bout ministers, sinisters
Banisters and canisters, bishops and fishops
Rabbis and pop eyes, bye bye, bye byes”
What’s everyone talking about where you live?
Well… we had a runaway a couple of towns over and that was a big deal recently.. they found her safe in a barn w/ some snacks. Other than that I am not really sure what the “hot topics” are

Lee DeWyze TIC Acoustic Cafe

Tuesday evening I noticed that TIC had *finally* added to their online contests a way to enter to see/meet Lee DeWyze at their acoustic cafe.  Since I never have any luck calling to get through to the station, I need to rely on their online contests page to win my way in.  It was a “contest” (as opposed to a trade-in or an auction) which is basically a raffle of sorts.  But I have been doing trivia daily for a long time to try and boost my bank of points, so I spent 100,000 points for 100 entries in to the contest.

The winner would be chosen at 10am and the event was said to start at noon so I figured I would have plenty of time to get up to Bristol where the event was being held.  (Though I had NO time to find someone to go with me as my guest!) At just around 10 I began obsessively refreshing the page to see who the winner would be. Then I saw it was ME! (yessss)  Shortly after I got an email saying I should be there at 11!  I ended up getting there a little after 11 which was fine because we were not let in until about noon and Lee came on stage shortly after.

He started with Sweet Serendipity, then he did a cover which unfortunately I can’t remember what it was! He said it and everything but apparently I was just not paying attention! I am hoping someone else was there and remembers and can comment with it!  His 3rd song was Beautiful Like You.  We were only allowed to take photos during the 3rd song so I don’t have too many.  They also said the lighting was bright enough for no flash but I disagree a bit.  (Though I did get some alright photos)

After the performance we were ushered into another room to meet him. It was rushed so he basically said it was nice to meet me and I said it was nice to meet him too. We had our photo taken and I told him I would see him for the show tonight and he grabbed my arm and was like “you’re going tonight!?” all excited and he said that “tonight… tonight is going to be good!” (or something like that haha) I won’t get to see my pic with him for a week or two because I have to wait for the professional photographer to post it on their site and it could take 1-2 weeks! (Usually it is just one week though)

Idol Thoughts

Last night the Idols sang songs of MOTOWN! It was a big night because whoever goes home is not making the tour! Gasp! Random thought, if they use the save this week and then next week 2 go home.. how do they decide who is #10?  A lot of articles said that Katie and Andrew “shared” 8th place last season so it’ll be interesting to see if that ends up playing out or not.

I think everyone really excelled with this genre, which was surprising especially with our country stars. But they stayed true to themselves!  I am not sure who will be in the bottom… Haley, Naima and Paul perhaps?  I can’t decide who I think will/want to go home. There is no one that I am like “oh I don’t want to see them on tour!” So it is tough. (But I need Stefano to make it on tour. lol)

This week DialIdol has Casey on the very bottom, but Lauren, Paul, Naima, Thia and Haley are all considered in danger of going home.  But the raw numbers tell a completely different story – with Casey on top! Jacob, Thia, Naima and Stefano have the lowest totals based on the raw numbers.  So, once again, can we trust DialIdols predictions?  We’ll have to see what happens tonight!  (I just checked out their FAQs, which are a bit dated, but they say it doesn’t count text votes so I am assuming it is not counting Facebook votes either.  A lot of the more techsavvy younger fans are probably using these methods over the good ol’ phone vote which will no doubt throw off these results)

Casey – Not sure I am a fan of his new hairdo, but that is besides the point.  I think he started off a little slow but about the middle found his groove and I think he did really well.

Thia – Something upbeat! Hooray! And she sounded god too! Double Hooray!

Jacob – As Jimmy said – all these Motown singers came from the same background as Jacob so of course he did great!

Lauren – Definitely a great song choice. She did fantastic. I am beginning to worry if I’ll be able to pick a bottom 3… (Not that I thought Lauren would be in it at this point)

Stefano – I love Stefano but I just did not love this performance.  He sounded ok but I don’t know, there was just something off about it.

Haley – This was a great choice for her. And it seems like the hair stylist had a lot of fun with the straightener this week.  I am not sure that america will like this but I think it is a better fit for her than the other styles she was trying to “be” in past weeks.

Scotty – Ahh the country boy. This can make or break him… I think it worked out great (though my parents thought he should have done “papa was a rolling stone”) and I think just solidifies him being in the finals (And here I thought he was a one trick pony since he kept singing that one damn song!)

Pia – Now I want her to do more exciting songs. But she did great, of course!

Paul – I think he did a lot better with his guitar – not so awkward – but I am just not sure America “gets” him.

Naima – I… am not sure what to think of this. The singing was alright but the dancing.. I don’t know. I guess it went with the song but.. I dunno. I might have to watch that one back again to see if I like it better haha

James – The only thing I got out of his pre-performance interview was that he is working with Bob Babbitt.. who worked on Hanson’s album Shout It Out.  Then sometimes when he performs I close my eyes and picture Adam Lambert.  But as much as it pains me to say it (every week haha) he is good. I can see him coming in 3rd.

Book Review: American Idol Exposed

I am not sure where I ended up reading about this book, maybe at Vote For the Worst, but for the past couple of weeks I have had it bookmarked on Barnes and Noble’s website and have been debating purchasing it for my Nook.
I opted to first download the “sample”, which generally is the first few chapters of the book.  However, this sample was 262 pages! At first I had thought there was some mistake and I had gotten the whole book as the sample, but then I made my way to the end of the sample and it ended in the middle of a sentence.  I went back up to the Table of Contents and I had roughly *90* more chapters to read. (Some chapters were only a paragraph or two.)
However, there was nothing all that interesting in the book that is tempting me spend the $3.99 to find out the rest of it.
The idea of the book is that Justin Buckles worked on the show American Idol for several seasons and he knows a lot of the “behind the scenes” drama that went on. Except most of the drama, was exactly that – going on with people behind the scenes.  In the 262 pages I had read there was mention of the Paula/Corey Clarke drama, something about Kim Locke dating someone on the show which I had never heard about before, the Clay/Ruben drama and a very, very long chapter on Diana DeGarmo’s mother. (Surprise! She was a stage mother)  Everything else was about the crew doing drugs and how nasty the higher ups were to people and how he stuck around despite being sworn at and belittled pretty much every day.
I can’t say that I would recommend this book, but it is rather inexpensive if you have $4 laying around and are looking for something relatively easy to read for your Nook or Kindle.

Spotlight on Seattle: How One Woman is Changing Business as Usual

by Ed S. who has written at length about various subjects including online accounting degrees, Christian counseling degrees, music and more.

Hip-hop is neither a music nor a culture that is particularly open to women. A general lack of female musicians of a note and a boys’ club attitude makes the scene a mostly male affair. Concert promotion is also a male-dominated game, a tough and often ruthless business where the weak are taken advantage of, quickly eliminated — and financially broke. For those seeking to start their own businesses but stay in the black, you can find out about these government grants.
One woman is standing tough with the boys and has become the go-to gal for booking hip-hop shows of all sizes in Seattle. Melissa Darby, better known as the ubiquitous Meli, is a true power-player in the hip-hop scene, one interested more in furthering the culture and providing fans of all ages chances to see their acts than simply making a quick buck. As head of Reign City, formerly the recently-revamped Obese Productions, Meli produces a substantial portions of all the hip-hop shows that come through the city, now a major stop on most tours. In addition she is the talent buyer for the Nectar Lounge, a Fremont venue that has quickly established itself as one of the city’s premier clubs, in large part due to the both nationally-touring and locally-recognized acts Meli brings in.
Darby’s career began out of a love for music as an underage fan. She was involved with the Old Fire House, an underage Redmond venue famous for breaking some of the Northwest’s most notable talent including Modest Mouse and Elliot Smith. In Seattle, underage shows were few and far between because of the 90s’ Teen Dance Ordinance, which greatly restricted the availability of all ages shows. Meli and other like-minded individuals found the Ordinance unfairly targeted hip-hop shows, great stifling the growth of the burgeoning culture.
She and other hip-hop fans who would soon be major players in the scene, including power-player Marc Matsui and both members of highly-touted local act Blue Scholars, formed the Student Hip-hop Organization of Washington (SHOW) to make live hip-hop possible for the under-21 crowd. Over 5 years SHOW put on many successful underground hip-hop shows, every single one of them all-ages.
From there as the group disband to pursue their own respective interests, Darby started Obese Productions, whose signature logo could be found on the promotional flyers for almost all the big shows occurring in Seattle until very recently. Booking gigs for nationally-touring acts gave Obese the opportunity to showcase local acts as openers, helping to foster the burgeoning local scene that has seen significant notice from local mainstream media. Obese did all the shows, big and small, with Meli occasionally booking shows she knew would lose money — just to give artists she thought deserved the spotlight a shot at growing their music.
That’s really Darby’s mission right there — to help artists grow and reach new fans, by teaching them how to promote themselves and be well-rounded entrepreneurs, as well as make great music. A local gal who rides hard for the 206 hip-hop scene, she is keeping the promotion aspect of the scene in good hands, ones that, as the popular mantra goes, “bumps local.”
Darby’s story and values are ones that should inspire businesswoman in all walks of business. In a male-dominated scene and business, she is the top dog, out of hard work, unmatched hustle, and having her heart in the right place. By trying to do right by a scene and a culture that is quick to point out artifice and greed, she has risen to the top by unquestionably being authentic and having goals to help further the entire culture and not just her own financial success. That alone can get someone much, much further than any gender restrictions in place.

Take me back to Tulsa!

I really never thought I would be going back to Tulsa after my first trip there in May of 2009. But I was there for Halloween 2010 and it looks like I will be heading back once again in May 2011!

Yesterday I booked my flight and my ‘ticket’ is confirmed for the Hanson.net Members Only Event! I’ll work out the other details (hotel, etc) later. It will add a couple of states to my visited (or passed through) list as I have a layover in Detroit, MI and Minneapolis, MN.

I should have the whole day Saturday before the show to explore a bit (show is not until 8pm) and a couple of hours on Sunday before I head home too. It is my first time flying in to Tulsa directly – the past 2 times I have flown in to Oklahoma City. A ton of my friends are planning on coming too, some I haven’t seen in a loooong time so I am really excited 🙂

I’m hoping to secure some Guest Posts while I am away so there will still be content for you to read 🙂 If you’d like to write a guest post, check out what I am looking for here
